About the Author
Edmond Masciana has been a student of wine for over thirty years. A winemaker himself, he has written hundreds of articles on food and wine and has taught cooking and wine classes for over twenty years, including ten years at UCLA. His approach to wine is different from that of his contemporaries. Ed likes to talk to those whom he calls "real wine consumers": those who just enjoy wine for its own sake, not give it extraordinary status.

Ed lives by his credo, "It's not what you know, it's what you impart." Too many people in the wine trade, Ed believes, like to boast about their wine knowledge. Ed's philosophy is to share his vast insight with those who are interested in the subject, in such a way as to keep the listener at ease and interested but never intimidated.

A Must Have

Although I own The Sotheby's Wine Encyclopedia and sometimes refer to it when I am anticipating a conversation with a wine representative or connoisseur, I enjoy this edition of Shortcuts on Wine like a great pocket thesaurus. I think this concise guide to wine is a great way to nurture the vocabulary and experimentation level of any wine enthusiast, even if the enthusiasm has just begun. This edition is light-hearted, concise and even manages to be funny. It's a must have and would make an excellent stocking stuffer!

"Shortcuts on Wine" is a an excellent introduction to viniculture's roots and also provides readers with an excellent backdrop to the art of winemaking. From pinot grigio to cabernet, Ed covers it all in a very thorough fashion. I enjoyed the book tremendously!

Her family's life included the backbreaking labor and economic trials of raising tobacco, but it was enriched by a deep familial heritage, communal music, creative play, and traditional activities of many kinds. After the family converted to the Mormon Church, religious study and devotion became another important dimension. Effie's account of Mormon missions contributes to the little-known record of Latter-day Saint attempts to establish a presence in the South.

After marrying, the Carmacks moved west, eventually landing in the Arizona desert, where Effie took up painting in earnest. Her art began to attract modest attention, which brought exhibits, awards, and a new career teaching others what she had taught herself. Useful Overview---But that is it

I bought this book as a review book over Christmas. While it is useful in outlining the advantages and disadvantages of each method there are few examples. This book will be useful for your second shelf but did not earn a place in the top shelf. "Quality Improvement Tools and Techniques" by Mears fills that spot. However, Mears' book does not cover RCA in any detail at all so this book still earns a place in the second shelf. A much better book for RCA would be Smith's "Reliability, Maintainability and Risk: Practical Methods for Engineers." He provides more examples, which are the best way for engineers to learn. I do not keep it in the top shelf because it is too detailed. If you want an overview, Wilson's book may be useful; when you get confused, go to Smith.

A must have for operational forces! It cover a broad range of items that will give you valuble information. Unless you are a doctor, you need this book while on the ground! The only problem, it's not that easy to find the information you need quickly.

This handbook was great in its day, but is now woefully out of date. The most up to date publication of this nature is the Special Operations Forces Medical Handbook, 2008, edited by COL Rocky Farr and others. It is a hardcopy and is available through the Government Printing Office for $59.
A new DVD version of the Special Operations Forces Medical Handbook was published in August 2010 by the Government Printing Office, and is available from them for $25. It contains additional information on trauma, pediatrics, infectious diseases, dermatology. In addition, it has 1,400+ clinical photos and illustrations, and 100 videos.

An Important Contribution

Dona Luisa de Carvajal y Mendoza was a poet of the Spanish Golden Age and a missionary to England during the time of the intense and cruel persecution of Roman Catholics there. This volume includes Carvajal's "Spiritual Life Story", the vows she made, her poetry and a selection of letters. It is a bilingual edition, with the original Spanish on the left and the English on the right. This makes it useful not only for people who have no Spanish and want to expose themselves to her work, but also for students who are trying to learn the Spanish of the Golden Age period, which can be quite challenging. The notes are enlightening and the bibliography is useful. Carvajal deserves our attention, and the editor Elizabeth Rhodes organizes her material well.
