Reader Beware - Enjoyment Ahead

This compilation of exceptionally well-written excerpts is a wonderfully varied introduction to, or refresher of, longer works from some of the best authors of books about the Colorado River and its environs. The works range from the predictable, e.g., the writings of John Wesley Powell, Edward Abbey, and Ann Zwinger, to the unexpectedly insightful, e.g., the Paiute Indian Legend and a chapter about the Datura plant by Linda Hogan. Author Richard F. Fleck has carefully chosen writings that portray a variety of perspectives, each an invitation to a longer, more developed work of comparable quality. This is not the only collection of writings about the Colorado River, but it is one of the best edited. If you are looking for a listing of masterworks as recommendations for further reading you have to look no further than the Table of Contents of A Colorado River Reader. But beware, this introduction to the mythology, history, sport, philosophy, ecology, geology, and biology of the Colorado River may cause you to spend additional money on the books from which these passages were excerpted. Of course, and I know from personal experience, money spent on any of these books will be money well spent.

Cardin, a Conservative rabbi in Baltimore, explores the structure of Jewish time and its ability to lead us to the sacred, by weaving together history, Jewish law, legend, practice, ritual both ancient and contemporary and suggestions for celebration. What distinguishes this comprehensive handbook is Cardin's imaginative, poetic language and her inspiring willingness to share intimate experiences in her own life, from her husband's illness to her young son's declaration that he wanted to be a Christian. Cardin compares the onslaught of the daily world to being in a bakery too long ("the smell is still there, but we no longer notice") and suggests that Jewish patterns of prayer, blessings and sacred deeds "help us remain conscious of the artistry of everyday living." Part I features 14 Jewish holidays, including Shabbat and Rosh Hodesh (the New Month), while Part II elaborates on life-cycle observances, from birth and bar mitzvah to marriage and death. Cardin explains concepts and offers instructions clearly but not simplistically, enriching the text with snippets of ethical wills, memories, women's prayers, blessings and "personal weavings" (blank pages to be detailed with the reader's own observances). Rabbi Nina Beth Cardin is the Director of Jewish Life at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Baltimore, and the Chair of the Editorial Committee of Sh'ma: A Journal of Jewish Responsibility. She was the editor of Sh'ma from 1993 to 1998, and Director of the National Jewish Healing Center in New York City from 1995 to 1997. She lives in Baltimore with her husband, Rabbi Avram Reisner, and their children.

We Jews are a union of weavers. Interlacing our traditions and languages, our rituals and laws, with fibers gathered from the cultures around us, we each weave a personal shawl of Judaism. Some shawls are open and loose, allowing the currents of other cultures to flow in and out easily. Others are fine and tight, holding much of Jewish culture in and foreign cultures out.

The world of Judaism is filled with shawls of different weaves, from loose to fine, filtering the larger world in or out to a greater or lesser degree. Each adds its flair, its strength, and its warmth to the sacred garment of the Jewish people. Our choice of weave determines where we worship, what we eat, where we live, how we pray, whom we marry, what we do in our spare time, and how we educate our children. And every now and then we add a thread or two of a new hue and a new texture that serves to enrich and extend our wardrobe.

Sadly, sometimes we derogate one another's craftsmanship. It is true that with too loose a weave the cloth loses its integrity and ceases to be. And it is also true that with too tight a weave the body underneath smothers and dies. But most of our shawls fall somewhere in between. They complement one another, reflect in their similarity of form one another's authenticity, preserve the secrets of the different weaves for one another and for future generations, which is very good, for no one shawl can suit every Jew. And yet while we weavers differ, we should acknowledge that we all work on the same loom, with the same warp holding tight our differing patterns of weft. And that, if nothing else, should unite us.

In a prose style that beckons every reader, regardless of religious background, orientation, or affilitation, Rabbi Cardin explores the richness of Jewish tradition and the introduces a range of innovations that can deepen the joy of living Jewishly. She invites us into a world of practice that becomes a source of delight, illuminating history, explaining symbolism, and opening door after door into the calendar of Jewish living. Cardin writes with sensitivity to and a clear sense of celebration of the diversity of today's Jewish families and Jewish communities. This book belongs in every Jewish home. You will return to it again and again throughout the days of your life for direction, enlightenment and the pleasure of Cardin's beautiful prose.

This book is beautifully written and provides easy to understand information about the Jewish holidays and life cycle events. The reader learns about the traditional ways holidays are celebrated and is introduced to innovative rituals and observances. The author encourages readers to make notes throughout and also offers the opportunity to record ideas and reactions in the personal weavings section at the end. The Tapestry of Jewish Time is a great resource for individuals and families.

Mini Quality Encyclopedia

I thought this book might be just another introduction to quality tools. I was incorrect. The author covers 120+ quality methods and tools in a concise yet substantive way. If you are confident you know all there is to know about quality tools you may be surprised.
I call this book a concise encyclopedia of primary quality tools. The brief, but highly informative explanations are illuminated by understandable diagrams and charts. The information serves both as a quality-tools refresher and as enducement to explore tools and techniques previously unknown.
Did you realize that there are three kinds of brainstorming: "classical," "635," and "imaginary"? What is a "variability reduction process"? How is it used? What about the "critical incident technique"? The "Delphi Method," sounds exotic. What is it? Then there's the "hidden factory"? Can you open "the Morphological Box"? Learn how to use "PICOS" workshops. Delve into what a "Process Control Maturity Matrix" can depict. See when you could use "Thematic Content Analysis" or "TILMAG" or "Z-Series Matrices"? You'll find answers to these questions when you dig into this fascinating compendium of useful techniques and tools.
And, if these tidbits aren't enough turn-on, the book includes a comprehensive glossary. Quality Essentials' contents and features make the book a must have for people studying for ASQ certification examinations. It is probably one of the more useful books you'll want to take to the examination site as a ready-reference.
Dr. ReVelle made excellent decisions in the selection of the essential techniques and tools, while avoiding excessive material. My only minor complaint is I would have liked links to where to find more about the tools presented. The drawback is that would have increased the number of pages and decreased its benefit of simplicity and conciseness. For most of us I imagine the book is "A-OK" as written.
Quality Essentials is well-organized, inexpensive, and very practical addition to a quality professional's toolbox. My prognostication is that your copy will become dog-eared very soon.

This 18th-century novel turns the concept of "savage" on its head in a scathing--and feminist--critique of French society. It comes in the words of a Peruvian princess, Zilia, who has fallen into French hands after being captured by the Spanish. Zilia's letters of love and longing to Aza, the Inca prince she was to have married, shift focus as she is initiated into French language and culture by Deterville, a devoted young nobleman. She portrays the "barbaric" French nobility as effete hypocrites who value politeness and wealth over virtue and who raise their daughters to be ornaments ("It is based on their more or less painfully constricted bearing . . . that parents glory in having raised them well"). The questions of whether Zilia will be reunited with Aza and the fate of Deterville, who loves Zilia, sustain dramatic interest through this lengthy, if astute, portrait. In the end Graffigny portrays a woman of true nobility and courage who must recover her faith in life in the wake of exile and betrayal. Graffigny was a noblewoman who supported herself through her writing; her tale is a worthy restoration to the canon of women's literature.

Wonderful critique of Enlightenment France

Graffigny has been neglected too long. Her fictional heroine's commentary is as effective a response to the marginalization of women as Olympe de Gouges' "Rights of Women and Citizen". Perhaps more importantly, it's an entertaining narrative of a young girls journey towards independance and her own definition of autonomy.

I REALLY LIKED THIS BOOK. ALTHOUGH I FELT THAT ZILIA WAS A PITYFUL GIRL WHOM NEEDED TO TAKE CONTROL OVER HER SITUATION BUT SHE WAS A GOOD CHARACTER. I THINK SHE HAD A GREAT LIFE IN THE END. THE BOOK IS A QUICK READ AND ENJOYABLE. GREAT TO READ WHILE WATCHING THE MOVIE CRUEL INTENTIONS 1999. HOPE YOU LIKE IT TOO.

Yet Himmler holds a peculiarly memorable place in the roster of Nazi war criminals: he was the man most closely associated with the creation and operation of the Final Solution, the programme of formal mass murder responsible for the deaths of six million Jews in death camps. Breitman thoroughly examines Heinrich Himmler's character and life and explores the racial ideology and planning that led to genocide. Superior biography of Himmler

Heinrich Himmler, one of the most reviled personalities in modern history comes fully to light in this insightful study. What is it that makes a person evil? That is at the heart of Breitman's absorbing book. Unlike a devilish Faustian caricature, the narrative shows the SS Reichsfuehrer, a mundane, pedantic organizer who came terrifyingly close to translating Hitler's vision of of a "racially-pure" Europe into reality.
Heinrich Himmler may be the personification of Hannah Arendt's "banality of evil." A man who fawned over children, stopped to pick flowers and was every thoughtful with those under him, quietly and efficiently produced the machinery to send millions to their death.
(...) Breitman's book is not a "popular biography" in the modern sense, but rather a scholarly and academic treatment. However, this is a weighty subject and the author accomplishes much more with this approach through a fascinating narrative that assures the reader that this is an exquisititely researched picture of one of the most dispised personalities of modern time. Highly recommended.

Shows Himmler as a most gruesome crusader.

Not a biography of the Reichsfuhrer, but a carefully researched and annotated analysis of his role in the final solution. Himmler's own office logs and appointment books, where extant, are convincingly used. The most thorough account to date of the so called Madagscar proposal which preoccupied the nazis in the late 1930s as a way of exiling Jews. Himmler's often mutually suspicious dealings with underlings such as Heydrich and Eichmann are particularly well portrayed, although his relationship with Hitler is sometimes sketchy. The years 1944 and 1945 are treated rather briefly, presumably because Himmler's initiatives were mainly restricted to trying to arrange coverup of the atrocities. But Breitman has done a first rate job in showing us how Himmler's bureaucratic mind ticked. The book illustrates that you don't need to be a personal sadist to organize murder on a massive scale.

Breitman's Heindrich Himmler

A common misconception regarding "The Final Solution" is that it was constructed and sought out under the leadership of one man, Adolph Hitler. Richard Breitman, in his well written book, clearly shows his readers the involvement of several brilliant minds that eventually created the horrific answer to the Jewish question. Breitman goes through the progressive steps of Heinrich Himmler's ideas as well as his involvement in the "Final Solution" while keeping his readers full attention. Unlike many authors writing about this issue, Breitman seemed as if he, through his work, was attempting to see Himmler's view points instead of labeling him simply as a "sadist barbarian" as many would do. His ability to put aside the atrocities performed by the Nazi's and give his reader's an alternate route of understanding is just one of the reasons why I consider this book a success and a pleasure to read.

About the Author
Brock Dethier is Coordinator of Advanced Composition at Utah State University and co-director of the Utah Writing Project. He spent many “captive-spouse” years as an adjunct writing professor, and much of the irreverant wisdom of First Time Up grew out of that experience.

Great Information . . . Poor Construction

I acquired this book in paperback (not sure if it comes in hardbound) for an MFA pedagogy class. The information is great. However, the book is not bound well and the pages separated from the spine. Not one or two pages, but ALL of the pages. It's an excellent textbook with regard to the content/subject matter (I particularly liked the chapters on avoiding stress and theory). There are helpful author quotes and tips (Wendy Bishop and Peter Elbow). I keep my books to use as reference/resource material. This one will require special handling (maybe a rubberband or two). It gets "five" stars for content and "two" for construction. So, a "three" star rating overall.

Very helpful for first-time teachers

What a great book! This answered every question I had before beginning to teach composition courses, and plenty of questions I hadn't even thought to ask. Funny, accessible, and REASSURING. I was confident on my first class instead of nervous, and this book is to thank.
