Spanish is Not grammatically correct!

I decided to buy this book after reading all the reviews but once I got it I was so disappointed about the Spanish translation that I am sending it back. I am a native spanish speaking and I was looking for bilingual books to read to my 15m son. This is not what I want for him. I want him to speak a proper spanish and this book's spanish is not perfect. Looks like they were more concerned with a literal translation rather than the meaning . Big disappointment. Otherwise a nice book, with beautiful illustrations.

So much more fascinating than I'd expected

Bought this in advance of roadtrip to check out the Grand Coulee Dam. Expected usual description of all the engineering marvels, did not expect the fascinating background of the politics behind it. No idea how many years Pitzer spent researching this book but I am in awe of what he came up with.

It's okay, but Summitpost is a better resource for highpointers

I bought a few high-point books to see what they had to say. I am currently in the midst of the highpoint journey myself (23 done in 12 months) . The information in the book is pretty decent, but its not anything that goes beyond what you see on summitpost.com for free (no vested interest). It also feels like it was published in the mid-90s. The quality isn't quite what I hoped for.

When I take my trips, I don't take the book with me, and that probably says enough.

Excellent guide to the highest points of the fifty states

Don Holmes has provided us with an excellent guide to the highest points in each of the fifty states. He gives route directions, trail descriptions, alternate routes, and a set of references for each state.
Some of the references are to web sites. For instance, there are two good web sites devoted to the highpoints: highpointers.org, and americasroof.com (neither uses the www prefix). Holmes' book can be used to even greater advantage when combined with the information available on the web. I am happy to report that the people who control the access to Jerimoth Hill in Rhode Island (the Wide-place-in-the-road State) have been convinced by the Highpointers Club to put up their shotguns on four days of the year to allow access to the highpoint. I suppose that we should be grateful - grateful that so many of the natural landmarks in the United States are held open for the public by government ownership.
The book's subject has presented me with some unanswered questions. Why do many states celebrate their highpoints with monuments while some others ignore them? It cannot be a regional issue. Pennsylvania has surrounded theirs with a park while nearby Maryland leaves it to a small but dedicated group of individuals from West Virginia to mark a trail and maintain the highpoint.
Why are so many of the highpoints near the boundaries of their states? I suppose that in the midwest where the land is flat and the slope is uphill toward the continental divide, the highpoints can be expected to cluster on the western edges of their states. However, many of the eastern points lie on state boundaries. Perhaps the mountain ridges helped to define those boundaries.
Finally, what attracts people to highpoints? Why is the summit of Mt. Elbert so crowded while nearby Mt. Massive is relatively ignored. I did find local residents on Mt. Katahdin and also Wheeler Peak who make annual trips to the summit of their highest peak. Certainly, the pursuit of highpoints does provide an excuse for traveling to new places. I would never have gone to Kenton if it were not for Black Mesa. It was worth the trip. I suppose that you cannot visit all fifty of the highpoints without also visiting all fifty states.

Dated but helpful

Even though this book is somewhat dated (2000c), it has already helped us find a "highpoint." Since the Louisiana location is on private land, it was more difficult to find than most, many of which are in parks, etc. The book even had the telephone number of one of the land owners. We called her and got permission to hike. After hiking there and in Arkansas, we found that the trails are somewhat improved since the publication of the book. They were well maintained and well marked. Obviously, "highpointing" has continued to gain in popularity, so it seems that a new book or newer edition of this one would be in order. That said, this book is still helpful, and it seems to be one of the few out there. At the price, it's still worth the purchase.

Kindergarten-Grade 3-Tony notices that his skin is darker than yellow-haired, blue-eyed Scott's, but lighter than that of his Native American friend, Will. Will's explanation that Tony is half or "less than half" of each culture does not satisfy him. Questioning his aunt, his brother and sister, and his uncle, the boy strives to understand his heritage. Each person offers him a wise answer, but it is his Native American grandfather who helps him see that Tony reflects all the colors of his family, and is "more than whole." Michael Lacapa has used traditional Indian designs in his beautifully stylized gouache and pen-and-ink illustrations; their derivation is explained at the book's end, along with Indian beliefs and terms incorporated into the text. A well-designed effort, this title is for all children of multicultural marriages who struggle to find an identity. It serves not only to illuminate Indian culture, but also as a gentle celebration of mixed heritage.

Less Than Half, More Than Whole

This was a cute children's story, with wonderful drawings. There are many children that are not all one race, and this story lets them know that they are still whole and complete children with a mixture of good from all sides of their families. The grandfather in the story is naturally so full of wisdom.

I enjoyed it from a grandparent perspective, and would recommend it to my grandchildren or other children any time.

An excellent book to help children deal with mixed heritages

I teach at a public school on a Native American reservation. I read this book to my students every year. The book deals frankly, in a way even young children can understand, with the issues of mixed heritage. I recommend this book to all teachers regardless of your population. Using the illustration of the multicolored indian corn the author helps us see the beauty in all colors of skin, eyes and hair. The book makes all my kids, European American, Native, African American, Asian American and the mixed rainbow of us all feel like we belong together.
