Samuel Bronfman's father failed as a wheat farmer and then found success selling frozen fish, firewood, and horses. And thus began what was to become the Seagram whiskey empire. Sam's insight and timing were right as Canada, and especially the United States, were coming under the influence of the temperance movement. While legend often places Sam in the thick of Prohibition era bootlegging and rum running, in fact he built for the long term and kept his operations within both the law and its loopholes as he supplied American bootleggers. Sam demonstrated his marketing genius by insisting on quality in a business notorious for cutting corners and thereby set the standard for the industry in the decades to follow. Sam's success in penetrating the American market was such that after Prohibition his competitors lobbied the federal government for protection. While Samuel Bronfman is a classic rags to riches tale, it is also the story of a Jew who remained in many ways outside business and social establishments even after becoming internationally famous. Commuting every week between his Montreal and New York office, his was a private life centered on his family and their home in Montreal and summer places such as Tarrytown, New York. In the 1950s Sam, under instructions from his daughter Phyllis Lambert, commissioned Mies van der Rohe to design a new corporate headquarters, the Seagram buildingat 375 Park Avenue, a landmark on the New York City skyline. As a leader of the Jewish community Sam was elected president of the Canadian Jewish Congress in 1939, and went on to organize financial aid to the fledgling state of Israel, beginning decades long involvement in Jewish

In terms of 20th century business titans, Bronfman has been completely forgotten. Of all the people for it to happen to, Bronfman is least deserving as his family legacy has stood the test of time. His grandson is now the CEO of Warner Brothers Records and a small oil investment in Texas turned until a multi-billion dollar payout.

Regardless, Marrus' book does the man much justice. Despite pushing 550+ pages it is never boring. Seagram is seen as a crafty hustler, turning a family hotel business into a bootlegging business into the biggest whiskey company in the world. His penchant for quality, lineage and aspiration were the underpinnings for his success in an industry dominated by century old distilleries.

This book is worth having, even if long out of print.

Such ideas arose from literal readings of Austen’s letters, the family’s representation of her as a gentle, unlearned genius, and the assumption that she could not write about the Napoleonic Wars. Persuasion is, though, permeated with references to war as well as peace.

Harris suggests that Persuasion may respond to Walter Scott’s review of Emma, Austen’s correspondence with Fanny Knight, hostile reviews of Frances Burney’s The Wanderer, contemporary attacks on the novel, and her own defense of fiction in Northanger Abbey. Self-critical in revision, Austen calls on Byron, Shakespeare, Napoleon, and Cook to modify wartime constructions of English masculinity such as Southey’s Nelson. Similarly, her critique of Scott’s first three novels confirms that her attitude toward class and gender is far from reactionary.
Persuasion reveals Austen’s patriotism, her pioneering lyricism, and her hopes for sexual equality. Although like Turner she portrays Lyme as sublime and liminally open to change, she attacks Bath, a city shadowed by mortality and corruption, with a savage indignation characteristic of contemporary satire. Persuasion sketches a society founded on merit and distributive justice, its turn from woe to joy derived not so much from her own life as from the seasonal resurrections of Shakespeare’s late tragicomedies, her religious beliefs, and the nation’s mixed grief and jubilee after Waterloo. Harris draws on new information to argue that Austen is an outward looking, intertextually aware, and remarkably self-conscious author.

A classic of biblical interpretation

Nicholas of Lyra (fourteenth century) was a seminal figure inthe development of Biblical criticism. His commentaries were thefirst to be published and represent a transition towards a more critical approach to biblical study. In particular, his knowledge of Hebrew and Hebrew commentators may be seen as an indication of this. They were also highly influential in the development of Luther's thought. In this study of the Old Testmanent book known as the Song of Songs, Lyra follows the classic Rabbinic commentator Rashi, in approach, albeit with a marked Christian emphasis in some details, particularly in the latter chapters. Lyra reads the Song allegorically, as describing poetically the history of up to and including the foundation of Christianity and its acceptance by Constantine. The Church is seen, then, as a continuation of the Israel of the Old Testament. Although modern commentators eschew allegory as a method of interpretation, Lyra's historical significance can not be discounted, especially in his knowledge of and openness to Jewish writers. This book contains the original latin text and an accurate translation of it into English. There is also a useful introduction outlining the context and significance of de Lyra's work. not worth it

If you have any idea about what a warehouse is, this book is NOT for you. The book is written at an elementary level and provides very little insight into types of industrial facilities. I've been in real estate for 8 years and bought this book to further my understanding about industrial...it didn't give me anything. Don't waste your money.

About the Author

Adolphe Belot (1829-90) was born in Guadeloupe, studied and practiced law in France, and became a playwright and novelist in Paris. The money he made from his many potboilers supported his extravagant lifestyle.

Christopher Rivers is professor of French at Mount Holyoke College. He is author of Face Value: Physiognomical Thought and the Legible Body in Marivaux, Lavater, Balzac, Gautier, and Zola.

Why won't she sleep with him?

Whatever you do, don't read the preface by Zola before you read the book. Zola gives away the whole story in his ardent defense of his friend's novel and its sensitive subject matter. Wait on the introduction, too. Its insights will be more meaningful after you've suffered along with the protagonist.

Adrien de C. makes his fortune building railroad lines in Egypt. Back in Paris, he feels quite ready to marry. But he's too fine a catch, with his appealing looks, good character and sound finances. Matchmakers inundate him with model young ladies. Their very perfection soon bores him. He falls madly in love with a sulky, sultry beauty who promises to be difficult.

And Mlle. Giraud is difficult indeed. Although she weds Adrien willingly enough, night after night she locks him out of the bedroom, refusing to consummate the marriage. She seems happy only in the company of her best friend from convent days, Mme de Blangy.

The plot evolves around Adrien's many elaborate attempts to overcome, or at least understand, his wife's resistance. But the plot is merely the medium for a powerful piece of psychological realism.

Mademoiselle Giraud first appeared in 1869 in serial form, but the series was cancelled, supposedly due to public outrage. When it was published in complete novel form, the book sold thousands of copies and was reprinted thirty times.

I won't give away the "scandalous" subject of this book. (Maybe you know it anyway?) Just be prepared for sexual attitudes that are purely nineteenth-century.

Assuming you're an enlightened reader with twenty-first-century ideas, you're not likely to agree with the viewpoint of this book. But you can still enjoy it as a revealing product of its time - and a fascinating portrait of frustrated love. At least, I did.

It also takes a fresh look at poets whose work has been dismissed as sentimental (Frances Osgood), genteel (Oliver Wendell Holmes), or didactic (William Cullen Bryant).

The volume's twenty-two essays are grouped into parts: "Teaching Various Kinds of Poems," "Teaching Poets in Context," and "Strategies for Teaching." The fourth part is a selective guide to the field: an annotated bibliography of editions, anthologies, reference books, biographies, critical studies, and Web resources.

About the Author

Paula Bernat Bennett, now retired, was professor of English at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. She has published widely in the field of American women's poetry. Her latest book is Poets in the Public Sphere: The Emancipatory Project of American Women's Poetry, 1800-1900 (2004).

Karen L. Kilcup is professor of English at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro. Her books include Robert Frost and Feminine Literary Tradition (1998), Soft Canons: American Women Writers and Masculine Tradition (1999) and A Cherokee Woman's America: Memoirs of Narcissa Owen, 1831-1907 (2005).
