Spider Spins a Story

Spider Spins a Story connects Native American tribes together with 14 various tales, all involving a spider. Preceding each legend is a brief history and description of the tribe associated with each story. Muskogee, Cheyenne, Kiowa, Hopi, Cherokee, Navajo, and Osage tribes, as well as others, are mentioned in the book.
Full of colorful, gorgeous illustrations by 6 Native American artists, the book is also endorsed by tribal authorities.
It appeals to both children and adults with its wonderful storytelling of Native American customs and lore. It is also a great reference to the past history and beliefs of Native American life.
The brilliant colors used in the illustrations are particularly appealing and remind the reader of fine Native American art. The Gilcrease Museum, located in Tulsa, Oklahoma, was an excellent choice for the detailed research needed to write this spectacular book. Spider Spins a Story is a perfect gift for all ages.

I got this book for the dreamcatcher story, as I had gotten one for my grandson and wanted him to know the native history. This book is so much more and is filled with wonderful indian stories

This book is a collection of 14 short and simple tales from various Native American groups. Each tail ties into the Spider motif that weaves its way to the Native American oral traditions.

The authors and presenters are an aggregate of storytellers and various writers. Even the editor Jill Max is actually a pseudonym of the team if Ronia K. Davidson and Kelly Bennett.

Each tail is simple and geared toward the young reader of grade two and up. It starts out with a few Paragraphs explaining the particular culture the story is being told by and for. These include Kiowa, Tewa, Zuni, Wiyat, Osage, Muskogee, Navaho, Achomawi, Cherokee, Hopi, Cheyene, and Lakatoa.

Not being that familiar with the different cultures I can not vouch for the authenticity of the different color paintings that accompany the stories, however they add a visual plus for the young reader.

The perfect gift for Father's Day and any day!

This is a gift from the heart for both the giver and the receiver. Every father or father-to-be should take the time to enter "his" story in this journal written just for fathers by Linda Kranz. As in her four previous journals, Linda provides "thought-starters" that lead the writer through the journaling process. This journal is divided into two sections, the first and larger, encourages fathers to share memories about their lives such as their first job, learning to drive, family/holiday traditions, and other facets of their growing up. The second focuses on the father's experiences with his children and their time together. A copy of "A Father's Journal" should be put in the hands of every new father and all fathers of growing and grown children. This is a true record of a father's family history and should be shared and passed down through the family over and over again.

"Minimum wage is more per hour than I would make at home by a long shot. So I work as hard as I can...but my citizen coworkers are always complaining. They even tell me not to work so hard because I make them look bad!" A father speaks of the intense hunger he experienced as a child and then recalls, "The first time my son said, 'I don't like this food, ' I burst out crying. My wife thought I was upset at his bad manners, but I was just so glad my son had the luxury of not likingfood...that my children have never known hunger." Whether about love, work, play, finances, or family, these accounts illuminate cultural differences in attitudes, rights, and values and pose intriguing questions about the effects of prosperity. West paints a very real picture of life for immigrants in the United States and, through her portraits, gives Americans a glimpse of themselves that may both surprise and challenge.

Seattle resident Lorane A. West based her writing on exchanges she witnessed through her work as an interpreter and advocate for Spanish-speaking immigrants. She has daily opportunities to become intimately and personally involved in the lives of her immigrant patients and their families. As she spends countless hours in waiting rooms, she gets to know them and hear about their lives in the United States. She goes into the exam room with them, observes some of their surgeries, and assists them as they learn to live with chronic illness. She follows them through cancer treatment, pregnancies, births, and deaths. And through it all, she listens. The idea for "Color: Latino Voices in the Pacific Northwest" arose from their stories.

Using a contemporary short format, each narrative is written in English as a loosely translated, spoken monologue from the immigrant’s perspective, although no story is based on a specific encounter or person. About the Author
Lorane West has been immersed in Spanish-speaking immigrant communities for her entire life. Her father migrated to the United States, and her grandparents could not speak English. She has lived in Nicaragua and is married to a Salvadoran. Her career has included paralegal work and client assistance at the Northwest Immigrants Rights Project and labor support and advocacy as a certified home health care worker. She is employed as a certified medical Spanish interpreter. Color is her first book.

Latino Voices in the Pacific Northwest is a collection of immigrant stories written as loosely translated spoken monologues, each written from the perspective of recent Spanish-speaking immigrants to the Pacific Northwest, with stories based in the healthcare setting, as well as at work and at home. The book speaks to the experiences of many immigrants and travelers across cultural boundaries. After reading this book time and time again, I still find myself laughing aloud or holding back the tears as different stories move me, which is especially impressive and touching as I wrote the book myself.

Wonderful book, reading it has been "deja vu" page after page. In my opinion, this book should be mandatory for all of those who work with the hispanic community in the medical as well as the legal arena in the United States. Like the author said: it makes you laugh out loud on one page, and moves you to tears the next. I'm seriously thinking on buying at least ten books just to have my community clinic co-workers read it!

Thought-provoking

This is a thought-provoking collection of stories and vignettes that capture the experience of many Latinos in America. The author draws from her personal experience and her empathy, to draw a human, compassionate, and touching portrait of her subjects, blending lives, circumstances, choices (and sometimes absence of them), and feelings. In a way, this book does double-duty as showing us a different culture amid ours and holding up a mirror that shows us who we are and who we aren't by contrast to that culture. If your experience turns out to be anything like mine, then you'll find yourself haunted by these characters and their experiences and reflecting on their lives long after you've read this book.

Reader Beware - Enjoyment Ahead

This compilation of exceptionally well-written excerpts is a wonderfully varied introduction to, or refresher of, longer works from some of the best authors of books about the Colorado River and its environs. The works range from the predictable, e.g., the writings of John Wesley Powell, Edward Abbey, and Ann Zwinger, to the unexpectedly insightful, e.g., the Paiute Indian Legend and a chapter about the Datura plant by Linda Hogan. Author Richard F. Fleck has carefully chosen writings that portray a variety of perspectives, each an invitation to a longer, more developed work of comparable quality. This is not the only collection of writings about the Colorado River, but it is one of the best edited. If you are looking for a listing of masterworks as recommendations for further reading you have to look no further than the Table of Contents of A Colorado River Reader. But beware, this introduction to the mythology, history, sport, philosophy, ecology, geology, and biology of the Colorado River may cause you to spend additional money on the books from which these passages were excerpted. Of course, and I know from personal experience, money spent on any of these books will be money well spent.

About the Author
Mordecai Kaplan was born in Lithuania and immigrated with his family to the United States in 1889. He was ordained at the Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS), and received a master's degree from Columbia University. He first served as associate rabbi of Kehillath Jeshurun, an Orthodox synagogue in New York, and later joined the faculty of JTS. Kaplan continued teaching and writing until his death in 1983, at the age of 102.

We plan to use this haggadah again next year

Used this haggadah for Passover this year. The table consensus was to use it again next year - and they're a tough crowd. It has a strong social justice theme woven in well. All the traditional prayers are included. Plenty of transliteration.

An Excellent Choice

This year, we decided to switch to a new Haggadah since we have evolved and there would be several among us at our Seder who are not Jewish. So we bought several low cost ($10 or less) Haggadah books for examination purposes - low cost so we could buy 15 copies so everyone could have one during the Seder.

This Haggadah was the winner largely because it gets to the point of the holiday without all the confusing fluff in the old-fashioned Haggadah. Perhaps even more importantly, the translation, side stories, and original commentaries explain the holiday, its symbolism in its foods, and its overall meaning/message/relationship to the issues facing civilizations in contemporary times far more clearly and directly than any others I have ever seen. (The explanations are so good that I would say they are "brilliantly eloquent.") A nice bonus is that several key blessings are transliterated so those who don't read Hebrew can participate more fully in the Seder experience.

This is a Reconstructionist Movement version Haggadah based on the efforts of several rabbis, including the Reconstructionist Movement's founder Mordecai Kaplan, and so the translation is gender neutral reflecting the Reconstructionist core view/value of gender equality in all aspects of religious rights and life. So if you are one of those Jews who insist upon the male-centric orientation of religious observance and Jewish liturgy of the more conservative Movements in Judaism, don't bother giving this Haggadah a look.

The reason I did not award this Haggadah a 5 star rating is because of failures to provide comprehensive coverage rather than dissatisfaction with anything that is there. Parts of the traditional Haggadah - both in Hebrew and in English translation - are omitted completely or have been too greatly abridged for my taste and this was a disappointment because some of these parts have become traditional "fun parts" in my family's Seder ritual. (Two examples: (1) The Hallel Songs of Praise before the meal is very much shortened and some of the songs we sing are missing; (2) The Hebrew and translation about rabbincal commentary on the 10 plagues being 40-fold, 50-fold, 200-fold, and 250-fold in nature - what we in our family have lovingly referred to as the "Creative Math Part" - is omitted.) But, if you have such family traditions, these things can be added in with your own supplements. Also, I would like to see more transliteration of some of the songs after the meal - again, so more can participate.

An expanded version of this Haggadah would be wonderful. I would like to see it redone with full inclusion of the traditional Hebrew text, with the now omitted portions featured and presented as being optional or supplementary in nature. (Bring back the Creative Math Part!) I would also like to see all songs include English versions and transliterations. Finally, I would like to see more songs shown embedded in the sheet music as now appears for Eliyahu Havnavi and Echad Mi Yodei-a. This would empower those at the Seder who are not familiar with the tunes to participate more fully.

A great review of the major assault rifles and subguns.

Duncan Long does a great job of reviewing the great majority of the worlds assault rifles and subguns. This book is a great startng point for anyone interested in modern military weaponry.
The book is broken down into sections covering machine pistols, submachine guns and assault rifles and does a good job of covering the various weapons.

This is decent but very basic info. Doesn't cover any real details or how they operate. I was really disappointed. If you want a light overview, this is for you, if you want details and specifics, look elsewhere.
