Part of the publisher's new series on "Jewish Women," this interesting book traces Jewish law on the purifying effects of water on women. Addressing a basic tenet of religious Jewish family life, the book also describes ethnographic and anthropological variation in adherence to water purification traditions. The Middle Ages saw a rabbinical expansion upon the rationale of the purification process, detailed in the codification of Jewish law in the first century. With the spread of the Jewish Diaspora, the populations of different geographic areas added local custom to traditional rabbinical law. The shifts in these populations, due to the Holocaust and the birth of the State of Israel, make for interesting historical, ethnological, and anthropological studies. Each article is annotated and has a bibliography. Recommended for academic libraries and for larger public libraries where Judaic studies, women's studies, anthropology, and ethnography are collected.

Brilliant and revealing

"Women and Water" is a well constructed essay of brilliant anthropologic examinations, through all manners of research, of the development and establishment of feminine purity laws. The short, yet in-depth study regarding social control based on gender and ethnicity is wholly revealing of the culture. Silent communication is loudest here.

Good information from an academic POV

This is an anthology of scholarly papers, so it doesn't *flow* evenly. It also presupposed at least some preexisting knowledge with the Jewish laws of niddah and family purity. However, if you're interested in the subject, this paints a fascinating mosaic of information. From the way certain talmudic arguments about the colors of stains may have disenfranchised women in ancient Judaism to the way some African Jews turn a bride's first mikveh visit into a party (and how parts of the Israeli establishment are trying to shut this down) this book gave new insights in what the mikveh means/meant to different people. The best segment, IMHO, is the last article which interviews modern American women on why they go and the advantages/disadvantages they have found. So much of that piece reflected my own experiences, that I insisted my husband read the article as well.
But, again, this is a scholarly work on mikveh history and practice, so if you're looking for a general overview or how-to, this may not be your cup of tea.

Great for students and nurses alike.

I bought this as a nursing student, 5 years ago, and never wrote a review for it. I love this product. In nursing school we are taught what different lung and heart sounds should sound like. However, reading what something sounds like and actually hearing it make all the difference. This CD breaks down different sounds nursing students and nurses should be familiar with. It's a good refresher for a nurse who hasn't had a patient with rales or hasn't heard a gallop in a while. I'd recommend this to nursing instructors, students, and nurses.

Great starter book for learning basic survival

The author gave great sugestions on basic survival skills. In the area of food storage he could have gave some more information on extending the life of everyday products and maybe a how to find experation codes. I would have given the book a 5 star but it was missing a few items....for the money, well worth the investment.

An absolute "must have" for the survival library!

As a former US Army Infantry captain...having taught survival techniques, I can tell you that I wouldn't venture into any long term survival situation without completely knowing the details of this book. This should be the Y2K BIBLE. Invaluable info for people who may very well be trapped inside a large urban area. The section on "Roast leg of dog" is not, however, for the faint hearted! Most importantly, this book teaches you that true survival is NOT hunkered down in the woods, chewing on hides and eating raw snake. It shows that true survival must maintain a decent quality of life or life isn't worth it. ALL OF THIS REQUIRES FORESIGHT AND PREPARATION!!! If nothing else...this book shows you how to get ready. As of this writing...the world has: 181 days, 1 hr, 16 min and 33 sec. to GET READY! The best first step is to buy this book!

An excellent book, a must have for the library.

This is one of those books that just has too much practical information to pass by. The author has placed a great deal of information at the readers feet, just reach down and pick it up. Most of the information in this book is old hat to old timers but how many of those are out there. For the rest of us this is a source of information that cannot be ignored. A personal opinion is that this book is one of the ten best for rural or back to basics/survivalist type living. A must have.
