Special book for special kids

My favorite children's author, Carmela LaVigna Coyle's new board book, Do Princesses Count?, is just what the preschooler's will love. It features the beloved princess from the Princess series (Do Princesses Wear Hiking Boots?, Do Princesses Really Kiss Frogs? and Do Princesses Scrape Their Knees?)

The Princess is in her hiking boots, with a daisy crown on her head and is going for a hike. She's counting all the animals she sees. There are butterflies, deer, frogs, skunks, squirrels, birds, bunnies, and bees. From 1-10 and back again, the princess' hike is full of fun and lots of animals.

The illustrations are delightful! They're colorful, playful, silly and captivating. And, the numbers are sparkly. And what princess doesn't like sparkles? Do Princesses Count? Is just the book to capture a little one's attention and keep it.

David Loxterkamp is a family practitioner in Belfast, Maine, and The Measure of My Days is an account of one year in his life and those he serves. It soon becomes clear in Loxterkamp's chronicle that one need not look to big city emergency rooms for medical drama: among his patients, the doctor includes one woman suffering from the debilitating and ultimately fatal Lou Gehrig's disease and another dying slowly from lung cancer. The dramatic, the tragic, and the transcendent moments of medicine are interspersed in Loxterkamp's journal with more mundane matters--breakfast with his family, Easter Sunday services at church, shopping at the supermarket--that complete the picture of a small-town doctor's life.

In the pages of Loxterkamp's journal, the reader meets mill workers and lobster fishermen, churchgoers and backsliders, young and old, the just-born and the soon-to-die. Loxterkamp, 40, describes himself as "a young physician of an older school." For 10 years, he has practiced in Belfast, Maine, a town with a long history of shipbuilding that has for some decades been beset by poverty. He and a colleague have established a family practice partnership that keeps them and their families in clothes, mortgage payments, and the occasional trip. Their patients receive honest, current treatment and referrals as needed; a hospice program has recently started. Loxterkamp, devoutly Catholic, bases this sometimes intensely emotional and personal account on the journal he adds to on his computer each morning before his wife, Lindsay, and young daughter, Clare, awake. Wife and daughter garner major shares of his life, and he candidly spells out his feelings and fears about family relationships. Loxterkamp also sings at church and with a choral group and often observes scenically and architecturally diverse Belfast during regular runs. In Medicine For More Of The Right Reasons

I had some spare time and was browsing through Amazon when I ran across this book. I have owned the hardcopy book for several years, I had purchased it after reading an article in "Life" magazine about Dr. Loxtercamp in which this book had been noted. I found the book most interesting and found myself walking through the area of Maine he practices as he went about journalling his days and his times & thoughts of his personal family time.
I found the man and his story most inspiring. Alot of people in today's medicine either are in the field for the money or find themselves disallusioned with the field because of all the insurance buracracy. I find those people who are in their field because that is where they truly want to be and for the want of helping others to be a rare find.
I could also follow along Dr. Loxtercamp's views and journeys of a small town doctor from working in the medical area. He tells his story compassionately and the reader can feel his humanity for others.
Over the past couple of years, I had looked forward for another publication and writing for Dr. Loxtercamp but sadly never ran across progression of this book. I found myself wanting to know more about how his journey has progressed along in the small town medical practice.

Good for those who want a slow read

I enjoyed this book a good deal, particularly Loxterkamp's attention to God and faith and the notion of ministering. I admire Loxterkamp's bravery for so much soul-searching over a year of his practice. This is a book to savor for those interested in rural medicine or family medicine. I give it 4 stars instead of 5 because I found his writing a bit labored. It's slow-going reading. It's also very much about him, him, him. A good contrast is to read Verghese's In My Own Country. Loxterkamp lacks Verghese's fluid style and attention to others. Despite his efforts to humanize, Loxterkamp presents fairly 2-dimensional portraits of his patients. This book is really more of an interior meditation, albeit a very good one.

Sam's insight and timing were right as Canada, and especially the United States, were coming under the influence of the temperance movement. While legend often places Sam in the thick of Prohibition era bootlegging and rum running, in fact he built for the long term and kept his operations within both the law and its loopholes as he supplied American bootleggers. Sam demonstrated his marketing genius by insisting on quality in a business notorious for cutting corners and thereby set the standard for the industry in the decades to follow. Sam's success in penetrating the American market was such that after Prohibition his competitors lobbied the federal government for protection. While Samuel Bronfman is a classic rags to riches tale, it is also the story of a Jew who remained in many ways outside business and social establishments even after becoming internationally famous. Commuting every week between his Montreal and New York office, his was a private life centered on his family and their home in Montreal and summer places such as Tarrytown, New York. In the 1950s Sam, under instructions from his daughter Phyllis Lambert, commissioned Mies van der Rohe to design a new corporate headquarters, the Seagram buildingat 375 Park Avenue, a landmark on the New York City skyline. As a leader of the Jewish community Sam was elected president of the Canadian Jewish Congress in 1939, and went on to organize financial aid to the fledgling state of Israel, beginning decades long involvement in Jewish

In terms of 20th century business titans, Bronfman has been completely forgotten. Of all the people for it to happen to, Bronfman is least deserving as his family legacy has stood the test of time. His grandson is now the CEO of Warner Brothers Records and a small oil investment in Texas turned until a multi-billion dollar payout.

Regardless, Marrus' book does the man much justice. Despite pushing 550+ pages it is never boring. Seagram is seen as a crafty hustler, turning a family hotel business into a bootlegging business into the biggest whiskey company in the world. His penchant for quality, lineage and aspiration were the underpinnings for his success in an industry dominated by century old distilleries.

This book is worth having, even if long out of print.

Such ideas arose from literal readings of Austen’s letters, the family’s representation of her as a gentle, unlearned genius, and the assumption that she could not write about the Napoleonic Wars. Persuasion is, though, permeated with references to war as well as peace.

Harris suggests that Persuasion may respond to Walter Scott’s review of Emma, Austen’s correspondence with Fanny Knight, hostile reviews of Frances Burney’s The Wanderer, contemporary attacks on the novel, and her own defense of fiction in Northanger Abbey. Self-critical in revision, Austen calls on Byron, Shakespeare, Napoleon, and Cook to modify wartime constructions of English masculinity such as Southey’s Nelson. Similarly, her critique of Scott’s first three novels confirms that her attitude toward class and gender is far from reactionary.
Persuasion reveals Austen’s patriotism, her pioneering lyricism, and her hopes for sexual equality. Although like Turner she portrays Lyme as sublime and liminally open to change, she attacks Bath, a city shadowed by mortality and corruption, with a savage indignation characteristic of contemporary satire. Persuasion sketches a society founded on merit and distributive justice, its turn from woe to joy derived not so much from her own life as from the seasonal resurrections of Shakespeare’s late tragicomedies, her religious beliefs, and the nation’s mixed grief and jubilee after Waterloo. Harris draws on new information to argue that Austen is an outward looking, intertextually aware, and remarkably self-conscious author.

A Revolution Almost Beyond Expression. This is marvellous book which is quite rightly receiving rave reviews in various publications around the world. Forget that Professor Harris is an academic and read the book, as I did, as if it were a novel. You will not be disappointed. Elspeth Sandys
