Informatively written by historian, archivist and educator Charles Mutschler, Wired For Success: The Butte, Anaconda & Pacific Railway, 1892-1985 is the exciting and enthusiastically recommended story of the Butte, Anaconda & Pacific Railway, how it became a pioneer electric railway system, and the impact it had on America from the late 1800's to the modern day. Black-and-white photographs combine with narrative description so real it transports the reader into a bygone era of railroading history.

a little known mining shortline railroad loaded with tons of photos and footnotes. High recommended for the
avid railfan, amateur historian , or someone with a keen interest in some Montana site seeing. A valuable reference book in my collection.

About the Author
Roberta Moore is an interpretive park ranger at Great Basin National Park in eastern Nevada. She sits on the Eastern Nevada Landscape Coalition Board of Trustees, which is working to restore damaged areas of the eastern Nevada landscape to their natural state.

Scott Slovic is professor of literature and environment at the University of Nevada, Reno. He has published widely on nature writing and ecocriticism and served as founding president of the Association for the Study of Literature and Environment.

A celebration of and a case made for wilderness in Nevada

"Wild Nevada: Testimonies On Behalf Of The Desert" is a collection of essays that promote the expansion of legally protected wilderness areas in the Silver State. The title follows in the footsteps of similarly-minded publications such as "Testimony: Writers of the West Speak on Behalf of Utah Wilderness" and "Arctic Refuge: A Circle of Testimony." As Roberta Moore and Scott Slovic explain, 'wilderness' isn't a notion that most Americans associate with Nevada. This is unfortunate since Nevada is one of the most beautifully wild states in the country. At the same time, she has been slammed with nuclear testing, heavy mining, extensive grazing and designation as the nation's nuclear waste depository. As resident populations grow and resources become scarcer, the editors propose to protect what's left with the creation of wilderness areas. The thirty testimonies come from a broad range of writers including academics, ranchers, politicians and rangers. Naturally, some of the selections resonate more than others. Jon Christensen's 'Nevada: Wilderness or Wasteland' is especially interesting in that it offers the assessments of John Muir. US Senator Richard Bryan shares insights he gained when taking a trip into the Black Rock Desert. The book features many persuasive writings on Yucca Mountain. US Senator Harry Reid once more advocates his home state's natural wonders while touting his accomplishments in wilderness expansion. As an artistically written yet fact filled essay, Reid's 'Blank Spot on the Map' is deeply satisfying. As with Snyder's 'Finding Space in the Heart,' the testimonies actually extend beyond essays to occasionally include poetry. The contributors section offers a useful write-up on each author, illuminating the life experiences that influenced the angle in each essay or poem. Early in "Wild Nevada," many of the writers appeal to the reader's spirituality. This reviewer has always found an appeal to the reader's belief in the supernatural to be a weak argument to get anybody to do anything let alone protect the environment. For the most part, the short essays (most are only a few pages) are informative and interesting opinion pieces. Some essays directly advocate a legal change in land status. Most essays offer bucolic vignettes and personal experiences in Nevada's outback. Those who think of Nevada as a landlock of dead-looking yuckiness should walk away from this book with a better sense of appreciation for the Sagebrush State's flora, fauna and geography. This is after all the goal of the book. There's always the hope that enough little books like "Wild Nevada" will eventually convince people that Nevada is not a wasteland.

When a group of California-bound "argonauts" almost perished, crossing Death Valley's wasteland in 1849, the legends of gold and hellish climate instantly achieved lasting interest.i rewrote this sentence; read carefully But modern readers will have problems with these 27 tales: most were written between 1890 and 1910 in the ornate, stilted diction of that era. There's some historical value in a few eye-witness accounts of the '49ers' troubles: John Wells Brier's "The Argonauts of Death Valley" and William Lewis Manly's "Good-Bye Death Valley!" and "Charles Alvord." The other pieces have curiosity value at best. Sydney Norman's 1908 attack on "Death Valley Scotty," titled "Chasing Rainbows in Death Valley," is longer on spleen than on facts or good writing. Sadly, there isn't much good writing here at all, and without the editors' introductory notes readers would have trouble discerning truth from fable. The final section, on "Tall Tales," dowses for humor and comes up dry.

Magnificent Overview of the "Empty Quarter"

If you were to only have one book on the Great Basin - this should be it. It covers the flora & fauna of this least know section of the lower 48 in a comprehesive, yet not belabored fashion. Plenty of salient details with a minimum - though adequate - smattering of scientific jargon. Even though I have worked for a public land management agency in the "Basin" for over 2 decades, I learned much and enhanced my understanding of things I did know. The photography by Trimble captures the inescapable beauty of the area that is unknown to the typical drive-through-as-fast-as-you-can tourist. There is no finer book - verbiage or photographic - on this largely unpopulated jewell of complex arid ecosystems.

The Sagebrush Ocean : A Natural History of the Great Basin

This book was GREAT! Between the pictures and maps I found an author who shows a great deal of expression, passion and dedication to his work. Using common names for plants and animals except when specific subspecies are mentioned made the book much more readable for a layperson such as myself.
My next trip to the Great Basin in Oregon will be more fulfilling and educational as much of my ignorance about this special area has been dispelled.
To date this is the best money I have spent on a book about the Great Basin.
(Originally wrote this in 1999 and feel even stronger about this book in 2004!)
