Clark Colahan is former Anderson Professor of Humanities and Professor of Spanish at Whitman College until retirement in 2011 and is now professor emeritus. He is a specialist in Spanish Renaissance Literature and has published books on Cervantes, the mystics María de Jesús de Agreda and Miguel de Quintana, church reformers and the originators of the Picaresque genre.

FOR LATIN AND COMEDY LOVERS ALIKE

It is a light-hearted, delightful comedy, with the Latin original and its English translation on facing pages. Many thanks to both translators for making this play accessible to the English-speaking world. This playwright, who wrote this play hundreds of years ago, wittily and craftily addressed many issues that are still relevant to our modern day. If you're a classics student, this play will help you consolidate your Latin. If you know English only, it will still make you laugh out loud and give you food for thought. Very entertaining! I only wish a movie version of it were produced - in Latin, of course - with English subtitles!

The best Manara comic there is.

Any comic by Milo Manara is 100% guaranteed to be entertaining, but this is the absolute best.

When I first read it in high school in used copies of Heavy Metal, it changed my life, both in terms of the way I think about comics and life as well. Manara has some awesome color and ink wash work out there, but this black and white pen work is where I think his world view really makes the most impact. The strangeness of this comic will reach out and haunt you. You won't be able to forget it.

It has a sense of quietness and oddness that propels its erotic core into something of intense meaning and significance.

The elements of absurdity, eroticism, psychedelia, and social commentary all blend together with an entertaining plot and extremely beautiful art to produce something that is very human, very intimate, and at the same time very "trancendental."

It has been out of print for a long time, but hopefully the new Milo Manara Library installments will feature it at some point.

Contrary to the Title . . .

This little 100 page book will, I believe, become a "classic" that must be read not only by philosophers and theologians, but be anyone interested in morality and ethics, whether or not they agree with Professor Rist's thesis. (As an aside, it was quite clear when Professor Rist presented this Aquinas Lecture, that some of the philosophers in his audience definitely did not agree with it.) But agree or not, in clear and concise language, that is as easily understood by lay persons as by academics, Rist makes the case that moral philosophy cannot be inoculated from God, as our modern society consistently attempts to do, because God is the necessary and indispensable foundation for ethics and morality. But perhaps more unnerving still, Professor Rist lays the blame for the origination of "profane ethics" squarely upon the sholders of "a group of theistic, indeed Christian, philosophers who act as though it makes no great difference in ethics whether God exists at all." This unapologetic "apologia" moves quickly through history, starting with St. Augustine and eventually honing in on a point Kant made, that theoretical reason [is] essentially impotent, and certainly has nothing to contribute to ethics." Yet Rist moves beyond Kant's practical reasoning, the "root" of our modern theories, to assert that in the moral debates of this world, we must have the courage and willingness to not compromise with the truth about ethics. Thus he concludes, "Stubbornness in itself is no virtue; knowing what cannot be compromised in a hostile environment certainly is."

A performance artist and art history professor at the University of Nevada, Reno, Frueh has a lot to say about her own sexuality. She shares with readers her girlhood masturbation pleasures, her memory of seeing her parents having sex and her parents' celebration of her first period. She describes her various experiences of arousal and orgasm, as well as her intense identification with Mel Gibson in Braveheart. She discusses favorite outfits, perfumes and makeup. Now and then she mentions her love of chocolate and sensuous flowers, and her theories about why people admire her "luminous sexuality" and find her so "seductive" and "glamorous." Yet it may be hard for some readers to find Frueh as fascinating as she finds herself. For Frueh's wing of the avant-garde, it's liberating to be into beauty, especially "high femininity" styling. Thus she dismisses Eve Ensler's Vagina Monologues as insufficiently outrageous or revolutionary, only to go on for pages about the wonderfulness of the color pink, or how hot she thinks she looks in her Betsey Johnson dress with her cute little ankle boots. Frueh's book will be too narcissistic for most readers, though those who enjoy deep discussions of vaginas and vulvas will certainly be pleased. (Mar.)

Art history professor and performance artist Frueh, whose work possesses, according to critics, a "luminous sexuality," suffered multiple losses within months when both parents died and her husband left her. Her memoir of redemptive healing mixes chronological narrative with flashbacks, fantasy, and free-flowing associations in a densely written, complexly textured, and sensual account. She writes of her imaginary male self, "Mel," based on actor Mel Gibson, a male symbol for her strength and bravery even though she is happy in her female body. As she scrutinizes her inner feelings, passions, and intuitions, Frueh nourishes her senses and is finally able to celebrate the mourning process, which inspires her to build a parallel to her lifetime love of chocolate with all of its sensuous pleasure. This book has everything I've needed so far, although the college search has just begun. It gives a lot of information that I wouldn't have expected. I know we could look at one in the library, but it is great to have it as a reference at home whenever I think of a school and/or quandry.

We bought this book a while ago it came in a timely fashion. Both of my children used the book and it was very useful. It helped them choose a college and what majors were offered. They had this book at school but it was much easier to use it at home whenever needed.

This is a truly wonderful book, richly researched and deeply thorough without overwhelming the reader. This is a history that helps us understand past struggles to protect this important mountain range and provides hope for even more protection. After you read it, you will remember the Mono Lake Committee and perhaps you will also envision the restoration of Hetch Hetchy Valley. Everyone who lives in California or plans to visit the Sierras, with an eye toward nature and our place in it, should read this book.
