Part of the massive relief effort of Roosevelt's New Deal, the ccc was created in 1933 to give young men an opportunity to work and make money to help families devastated by the Great Depression, and to participate in forest and conservation projects across the country. In Arizona, thousands of young men, many of them from the industrial Northeast, served in the state's ccc forest camps. Arizona's Mogollon Rim is a spectacular expanse of cliffs that slices through half the state, stretching from Sedona eastward to New Mexico. Along with the White Mountains, it includes the largest contiguous forest of ponderosa pine in America. Remote and little-visited in the 1930s, the Rim Country offered copious outlets for the ccc men's energies: building roads, public campsites, hiking trails, fire lookout towers, and administration buildings; fighting fires; controlling erosion; eliminating vermin; and restoring damaged soils.

Robert J. Moore was an American history teacher in the Scottsdale, Arizona, school district. He also worked for many years as a seasonal interpretive ranger in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests in Arizona. He currently lives and teaches in Verona, Wisconsin.

A well-written account of the CCC in the mountains of Arizona.

Sometime in the late 1960's, I was walking with my grandfather along a remote stretch of East Fork of the Little Colorado River where it runs south of Greer, Arizona. Somewhere along the way, we came upon a series of fishing pools which had been created with log dams built across the stream. My grandfather explained to me that men of Civilian Conservation Corps had built the dams in the 1930's. I was only about six years old at the time, so he had to explain to me just what the CCC was, and how it had helped many young men eek out a living during the Great Depression. I was fascinated, if for no other reason that the men had done such fine work that the log dams remained intact almost 40 years after they were built. I have often returned to this stretch of stream during the ensuing years, regularly fishing in the very pools that I first saw that day, and I am pleased to report that in 2012 the stoutly built dams remain where they were built, a fine testament to the men who built them almost 80 years ago.

Because of this personal experience, I was very pleased when I came upon Robert Moore's account of the CCC operating in this part of Arizona during the Depression. I was further pleased to find his book contained an account of the CCC camps in Greer, and that these log dams were specifically mentioned. Moore's entire book is filled with detailed information such as this. It is good to know that historians such as Mr. Moore have taken the time to record this part of the history of the United States. Most of the men who worked on these projects have passed on over the years, and it would be a terrible shame if the memories of their work died with them.

I live only a half-hour's drive from another monument created during the Depression, Hoover Dam, which stands as dramatic testimony to the hard work done in the 1930's to help pull our country out of those difficult times. The tiny log dams on the Little Colorado are insignificant in comparison, but it is fascinating to realize that these little constructions, which serve the same general purpose as mighty Hoover Dam, have stood just as long as that great structure built of steel and concrete. Thanks to Mr. Moore's fine book, future hikers who encounter the log dams will have a chance to read about the circumstances of their building, and more importantly, about the indomitable men who worked America out of the Depression.

I rate this book as 4/5 stars, instead of a full 5/5 only because works such as these are intended primarily for a limited readership. As a reference of CCC work done at this time and place, it would be difficult to improve on this book. Still, I would not want to give prospective readers the impression that it is a book which they will want to read cover to cover without setting it down. It is not that kind of work. Never-the-less, it is a fine piece of scholarship, and anyone who wishes to learn about this period in Arizona history will find it to be very worthwhile.

A valuable addition to any CCC or New Deal-related Library

This book takes a close look at a long neglected area of both Civilian Conservation Corp history and Arizona history. Moore's effort will be of interest to anyone seeking a scholarly but down-to-earth account of CCC work in the western United States. (By "scholarly," I mean that Moore's work includes footnotes, a useful bibliography, and index, which should make it a boon to other researchers of the CCC. By "down-to-earth," I mean that Moore's book isn't written in some long-lost scholarly vernacular that only college professors can decipher. To me, it's historical storytelling at its best.)

Moore knows his subject and he knows the region, delving deeply into individual camp histories and providing intimate glimpses into the lives of the men who lived and worked in those camps. The illustrations - rarely, if ever seen elsewhere - are an asset in their own right. If you study New Deal-related subjects, you owe it to yourself to read this book.

Arizona CCC Service

I was hoping for a lead to my Father's service in the CCC. That was to much to hope for, but the author's diligent research and interviews gave me an accurate picture of what the life and activities of a CCC boy was like. Even if I never find enough information to access my Father's records, I enjoyed this book and appreciate it very much. It was well worth the price and the time spent reading it. The references at the end of the book are very valuable.

If you plan on running any Utah river and creek, this is the guide to use for specific beta, when the best running time frames are (cfm wise), all permit requirements, put-ins and take-outs and all geography characteristics that may preclude a good time. Get it and take it with you! Awesome detailed route maps that can't be beat.

Odd Man in Intelligence

While researching in the State Department files on the activities of George Cupples Carothers, who was the US State Department representative accompanying the army of Pancho Villa (Division del Norte) in 1914 and 1915, I kept coming across telegrams and reports signed "Cobb". Cobb was the US Collector of Customs at El Paso, TX, and El Paso was the hub of US intelligence gathering, a main base for reporters, and the main port of entry for supplies and munitions going south to Villa's forces as they moved toward Mexico City in opposition to the Federalistas under Gen Huerta.
Likewise, it was the point for the export of Mexican products north whose sale was vital to the support of Villa's forces. Thus Cobb held the valve which could stop the flow of goods in both directions.
As it was, Cobb, an appointee of Woodrow Wilson, was an enemy of Villa, but so long as the Wilson administration did not choose to recognize one of the two contending Constitionalist leaders, Villa, or Carranza,and there were State Department observers with both factions in the North, Cobb had to let the pipeline flow, though once, he was able to choke off Villa's advance by holding up trainloads of coal for Villa's trains.
As Villa's fortunes waned after the battles in early 1915 and he began his long retreat north, Cobb became more and more active in intelligence matters. Judging from the traffic he acted as a de facto reciever of messages from others as well as gleanings from his own network.
This was entirely ex officio as the Treasury Department had no intel functions then except for gathering information on smuggling. It appears Cobb was one of those fellows who gravitated to the action and was unwilling to sit by and count rail cars as they rattled across the Rio Grande to Cuidad Juarez.
There is much traffic in the State Department files signed by Cobb concerning the hunt for Villa after he dispersed his forces in late 1915 subsequent to the defeat at Agua Prieta, Sonora. Villa's forces finally reappeared to raid Columbus, New Mexico, on March 9, 1916, thus precipitating the Punitive Expedition led by John J. Pershing.
Cobb fell out of political favor in El Paso after his term and left for California where he spent the remainder of his life.
This study is everything I wanted to know about Cobb and now I will not have to write him up. :)

Excellent research about a forgotten American hero

Excellent research and presentation about a forgotten war and an unrecognized American hero. Zach Cobb was a dynamo, a model intelligence officer, enthusiastic, knowledgeable, with a keen sense of justice and fair play, perhaps the man more responsible than any other for keeping the Mexican Revolution from spilling deeper into US affairs... In the end it seems that he was stiffed by the US Government and by his community... This well-written book and its' subject deserve more credit and attention.

Caroline Crosby's life took a wandering course between her 1834 marriage to Jonathan Crosby and conversion to the infant Mormon Church and her departure for her final home, Utah, on New Year's Day, 1858. In the intervening years, she lived in many places but never long enough to set firm roots. Her adherence to a frontier religion on the move kept her moving, even after the church began to settle down in Utah. Despite the impermanence of her situation, perhaps even because of it, Caroline Crosby left a remarkably rich record of her life and travels, thereby telling us not only much about herself and her family but also about times and places of which her documentary record provides a virtually unparalleled view. A notable aspect of her memoirs and journals is what they convey of the character of their author, who, despite the many challenges of transience and poverty she faced, appears to have remained curious, dedicated, observant, and cheerful.

From Caroline's home in Canada, she and Jonathan Crosby first went to the headquarters of Joseph Smith's new church in Kirtland, Ohio. She recounts, in a memoir, the early struggles of his followers there. As the church moved west, the Crosbys did as well, but as became characteristic, they did not move immediately with the main body to the center of the religion. For awhile they settled in Indiana, finally reaching the new Mormon center of Nauvoo in 1842. Fleeing Nauvoo with the last of the Mormons in 1846, they spent two years in Iowa and set out for Utah in 1848, the account of which journey is the first of Caroline Crosby's vivid trail journals. The Crosbys were able to rest in Salt Lake City for less than two years before Brigham Young sent them on a church mission to the Society and Austral Islands in the South Pacific. She recorded, in detail, their overland travel to San Francisco and then by sea to French Polynesia and their service on the islands. In late 1852 the Crosbys returned to California, beginning what is probably the most historically significant part of her writings, her diaries of life. First, in immediately post Gold Rush San Francisco and, second, in the new Mormon village of San Bernardino in southern California. There is no comparable record by a woman of 1850s life in these growing communities. The Crosbys responded in 1857 to Brigham Young's call for church members to gather in Utah and again abandoned a new home, this the nicest one they had built, one of the finest houses in San Bernardino. Such unquestioning loyalty was a characteristic Caroline and Jonathan displayed again and again.

The collaborative editorial work of Edward Leo Lyman, Susan Ward Payne, and the late S. George Ellsworth, No Place To Call Home: The 1807-1857 Life Writings Of Caroline Barnes Crosby, Chronicler Of Outlying Mormon Communities is the seventh volume in the unique "Life Writings of Frontier Women" series published by the Utah State University Press. Enhanced with a profusion of maps and illustrations, this is a chronologically organized collection of a Mormon pioneer woman's memoirs and journal entries that include her marriage to Jonathan Crosby in 1834, to her conversion to the infant Mormon Church, to her move to from Canada to the new church in Kirtland, Ohio, to her coming to Nauvoo in 1842, to her emigration to the Salt Lake valley in 1848 less than two years before Brigham Young sent Caroline and her husband on a church mission to the Society and Austral Islands in the South Pacific. Late in 1852 the Crosbys returned to California where she recorded the post-Gold Rush life of San Francisco, and the new Mormon village of San Bernardino in southern California. Then in 1857, returning to Utah in response to a call from Brigham Young where she resided for the remainder of her life. The book "Here's to Our Fraternity" one Hundred Years of Zeta Beta Tau is something that I would never read on my own just for fun but I can honestly say that I am happy that I did read it. This book though extremely hard to read for a continuous amount of time has more information about its topic than one can find on the internet. The most worthwhile piece about this book for me is that it taught me about what fraternities really are behind all of the drinking, partying and hazing. The information provided to me by this book will greatly help me with my next year of education by helping me decide on weather I want to join a fraternity/brotherhood. The righting in the book I must warn is very dry and dull but every page is chuck full of information; it also tends to get a little repetitive but in the end it is all worth it.

Taylor teaches courses at Berkeley on burial and afterlife and has previously published on Hinduism and ancient religions. The only obvious competitors to his first reference work are the Encyclopedia of Death, edited by Robert and Beatrice Kastenbaum (1989. o.p.) and James R. Lewis's Encyclopedia of Afterlife Beliefs and Phenomena (Gale, 1994. o.p.). The Kastenbaum volume asks, "What would one expect in an encyclopedia about death?," but its coverage of topics such as funerals is not very detailed regarding specific traditions. Lewis's work leans toward spiritualism, psychic phenomena, and the occult. Taylor's, on the other hand, is concerned with customs and beliefs relating to death and burial in a number of broad cultural contexts and groupings. The clear, well-written articles cover most major religious and cultural traditions from prehistoric to modern without being overly simplistic. However, some gaps should be corrected in future editions. In the article on burial shrouds, for instance, Taylor does not mention their use in Islam, Sihkism, and the Bah '! faith; there are no articles on the funerary customs of the Sikhs and the Bah '!s; and the entries on resurrection are titled in the form "Resurrection [Religion]," but there is no cross reference to the entry "Qiyama" from the entry "Resurrection, Muslim." All the same, these considerations do not undermine the broad value of this encyclopedia, which will be highly useful in academic, public, and theological libraries as a complement to the other two works mentioned.DWilliam P. Death and the Afterlife is a comprehensive encyclopedia that aims not just to present information but to "draw out the underlying meaning of funeral and afterlife traditions." Taylor is an instructor at the University of California-Berkeley who offers classes on burial practices and the afterlife and is considered an expert in religious studies.

The entries are succinct, tightly written, and arranged in alphabetical order, ranging in length from a single paragraph to three or four pages. Lengthier treatments include discussions of the funerary customs of Muslims, Jews, Hindus, and Zoroastrians; the origins of the concepts of heaven and hell among Christians and Buddhists; and a consideration of the soul from Chinese, Greek, and Persian perspectives. Briefer entries offer information on burial baskets, canopic jars, and near-death experiences; list the elements of a typical Christian committal service; and describe the antics of a poltergeist. Sidebars contain excerpts from sources such as Beowulf, the Bhagavad-Gita , and the Book of the Dead . Much of the sidebar content is taken from texts cited in the lists of references that conclude each entry and demonstrate Taylor's intention to draw from local and native sources as well as academic studies.

See also references allow for smooth navigation, as do the table of contents and the index. A bibliography of books and scholarly journal articles appears at the conclusion of the encyclopedia. Black-and-white illustrations are found throughout, some being full page and portraying the Tibetan wheel of transmigration, the Last Judgment, and the Taj Mahal, to name a few examples.

The encyclopedia attempts to educate and even, at times, entertain readers by exposing them to the varieties of afterlife traditions. This is not a morbid study but one that yields life-giving energy. The only comparable title to this excellent work is the classic but now dated Funeral Customs the World Over, by Robert Wesley Habenstein and William M. Lamers (Bulfin Printers, 1960). Amazing

This is quite simply put an amazing piece of scholarship that I just happend to pick up at used book store. I am a retired accountant and have never studied such things but was always interested in other cultures and how beliefs are different in different places of the world or in history. I can't tell you that I understand everything in here but this book taught me something important about myself and how I relate to the rest of the world. It's funny how a little book can make such a difference. Actually, the book is not little but it's such an entertaining read for those of us addicted to the History Channel, NPR and documentaries.

Good Specialty Find

This is a very good scholarly collection of articles about death and burial rituals. We ordered this for the library after one of our high school students used it for a report. Her teacher asked us to purchase it.

If your topic is death and burial rituals, look no further. This Berkeley professor collects everything you need in a way that makes sense.

My husband, not involved in the library sciences, thinks it is strange for me to be reading this book at night. I try to read and write about all new purchases for the library.

Worth it

This book is first rate. A really terrific find from the library that I ended up purchasing on-line for a decent price. Lots of information and it's well organized. You get a good study of comparative religion by way of detailed analysis of cross-cultural and cross-religio burial ritual and ideas about the afterlife. I see that the author has co-authored another book that got a terrific review. I might go ahead and get that too. Of course, it's a specific niche topic and you should share at least a general interest before buying Death and the Afterlife: A Cultural Encyclopedia.
