About the Author
Carma Lee Smithson was engaged in doctoral research when she succumbed to lymphosarcoma in 1961. At her request, Robert Euler arranged and expanded her work for publication. Originally published in 1964 as Havasupai Religion and Mythology, this work has been reedited and includes photographs and a new foreword by Euler, now a consulting anthropologist.

A Mixed Review

For the limited amount of information that the authors obtained, this was a fair compilation of Havasupai legends. I sure wish there were other resources that could have helped confirm what they described. Maybe someone else has more information, and I hope Mr. Euler can publish an update. The first few sections of the book were very informative, especially the funeral arrangements of Mexican Jack by his family. It really illuminated me about how very practical funerals were conducted, although I was surprised to find out that he wasn't cremated like many tribal members before him. I did not appreciate the legends portion of the book. Maybe it was the limited information provided by the shaman or the story-passer-on-ers, but to me it seemed to be a mixture of altered story telling--almost like a rumor mill where info is somewhat skewed as it is passed along. For one thing the mention of female sexual practices was contrived--almost artificially inserted--for entertainment. I sensed that the legend passers were male and that their frustrations or fixations (whichever the case) with female genitalia helped spice up the legends. The authors description of these incidental sexual acts were extrapolated from an earlier author from 1929 which may or may not be accurate. So I took the descriptions of these legends with a grain of salt. But like many other myths--they are based on fact. So I would love to read about an updated or more comprehensive sequel to this book.

It is clear from his lengthy explications on the subject, that architect Lawlor is very widely read in the religion and ritual of Native Americans, Hindus, Buddhists, ancient Greeks and others. But for anyone interested in the subject, the rich extent traditions of specific to the human spirit in architecture (particularly of the Japanese and Chinese) and the equally rich thinking of early 20th-century architects make much more intriguing reading. Chapters like "Spirit and Mortar," "The Eight Elemental Forms" and "Mind/Body/Architecture" are interesting riffs on the nature of materials; the uses and meanings of walls, columns and windows; and mental and physical scale, respectively. But taken as a whole, the book lacks a sense of natural progression. For readers interested in incorporating the sacred into their own dwellings, Lawlor includes suggestions at the end of each chapter ("Notice any pillars in your setting; they might take the form of table legs, standing lamps, candlesticks, or other times. How might these be redesigned to imitate your own stance and aspirations?"). Illustrations.

I had a bad feeling about this book, but I ordered it anyways. I was right! You will not learn anything new from it, other than the name of some of the saving options out there. The first edition of this book described how aerial photos and ground work could be used to characterize wetlands. This edition is a simple update adding a few modern remote sensing techniques.

Wetlands are regional and there are many sources of information on regional wetlands that provide a detailed account. This book tries a broad brush approach to a topic that should be treated with a regional book. It certainly would not be useful, for example, in determining the legal status of a wetland since that definition changes everywhere. According to the jacket, one of the author's only experience with wetlands is playing in them as a child. That hardly qualifies someone to be a co- author and lowers the credibility of the book. Everything in the book is superficial and so it might serve as a suitable source book in a primary school (K- grade 6).

I didn't find anything new or useful in this book; though admittedly it didn't take me long to ditch it. Wetland delineation is all about the details, and that's exactly what this book leaves out. Presumably its written for students being introduced to wetland delineation or maybe government employees that perform delineations only occasionally. I purchased it hoping to get some insight into the things I didn't quite understand in the Corps Manual and was disappointed to find that the author just left the difficult parts out rather than explain them.

This work is semi-technical in that it includes a good amount of technical information, yet is generally understandable to the non-specialist. Of course, one volume can only present so much information. Thus, for example, the chapter on fly ash is disappointing in that it only presents the major-element content of fly ash, and omits trace metals almost entirely.

This book is centered on chemical species and the effects of their introduction on soil. It also includes agricultural practices, involving both farm crops and farm animals, that make use of fertilizers and other amendments to soil. There is also a chapter on genetically-engineered bacteria in soil.

Straight-forward, focused, no frills or detours

This is a compact history ... but it does just what you want - gives what history is known of Cynthia Ann Parker. This is an excellent resource if you are wanting to know about Cynthia Ann Parker from the settler's perspective - the people she left behind, the family she had come from, and the search for her that continued throughout her 'captivity'. The author seems to steer clear of any area of conjecture, such as why Cynthia Ann got shuttled between family members after her return or what may have happened to her pension, and sticks only to documentable history. She also avoided sidetracking into the history of Cynthia Ann's famous son or the other people in her life except for as far as they pertain to Cynthia Ann's life. Focus is very tight, very informative.

The West's Most Famous Indian Captive

On May 19th, 1836 nine-year-old Cynthia Ann Parker, a member of a group of religious families occupying Fort Parker in Texas, witnessed the massacre of friends and relatives by combined bands of Caddos, Kiowas and Comanche warriors. Abducted by the Comanches, Cynthia was raised for the next 25 years as a tribal member and became "fully" Comanche, giving birth to Quanah Parker, the last Comanche Chief and one of the most influential intermediaries of his time, a representative of both the Native American and White cultures. Abducted a second time as an adult by a well-meaning Texas Ranger, Cynthia Ann was forced to return to White society, but mourned deeply for her Comanche family, ultimately starving herself to death out of grief.
Much lore and legend has grown around the story of Cynthia Ann Parker over the years, and it has often been difficult to separate the myth from the reality of her dramatic story. However, Margaret Schmidt Hacker has done just that. Over a period of five years, Ms. Hacker painstakingly researched the archives in Texas, Oklahoma, California and Washington, D.C. and objectively weighed all the accounts of Cynthia Ann's life. The result of her efforts is what is considered the most authoritative book on the subject. Although scholarly, it is at the same time, a gripping drama of the Texas prairies, and very readable by anyone with an interest in the Old West. Highly recommended reading.

Examining the Myth

Countless folk tales and sagas have focused on the story of Miss Parker, a captive of the Comanches for more than 15 years. Many of them deal only with her years as the mother of the famous Quanah Parker. Author Margaret Schmidt Hacker devoted five years to researching the life of the Cynthia Ann to reveal the history behind the myth. This is the tragic story of the abduction of a nine year old girl who returned reluctantly to white society when she was 24. A fascinating portrait of her life among the Comanches on the Texas frontier.
