Political scientist Utter and historian Storey, both of Lamar University, here update their 1995 reference work on the religious Right. The authors "treat the religious Right as an essentially political movement that courts voters" and lobbies for conservative causes. As such, the book's introduction and bibliographies necessarily shortchange the essential religious aspects of the religious Right. The battlegrounds of evolution and creation, school prayer, and moral and sexuality issues get adequate attention, but the role of the religious Right in U.S. policy toward Israel, for example, is virtually ignored. The book retains the format of the first edition, with chapters giving biographies of key figures, sociological survey data, a directory of organizations (both supporting and in opposition to the religious Right), and annotated bibliographies of print, video, audio, CD-ROM, and (new to this edition) Internet resources. The introduction and chronology give disproportionate space to the years since 1995. Given the large number of books cited, introductions to each section highlighting especially significant works would improve a third edition. With a topic as volatile as this, it is difficult to make an unbiased presentation, but the authors appear to have done so. Utter, a political science professor, and Storey, a history professor, provide a resource to use when writing a paper on the religious right, searching for debate material, or doing political analysis. In the preface they define their terminology and give the rationale for including certain groups and individuals and for excluding others.

Like other titles in the series, each chapter offers information in a different format. The most fascinating chapter gives the results of a 1994 survey of attitudes among both mainline and evangelical Protestants from across the country. This chapter also includes quotations on a variety of topics and reproduces voting guides from the Christian Coalition. The introduction shows the tie of the religious right to the anti-Communist hysteria of the 1950s, the movement against secular humanism of the 1960s and 1970s, and its evolution as a political entity in the 1980s, focusing on Pat Robertson and the Christian Coalition.

A chronology covering 1835 to 1995 lists events with an explanation of their relevance to the religious right. Events covered include prohibition, the Scopes trial, Engel v. Vitale (school prayer), Roe v. Wade, and the Jim Bakker and Jimmy Swaggart scandals. Another chapter contains biographies of such people as Father Coughlin, William Jennings Bryan, Jerry Falwell, Billy Graham, Ralph Reed, and Robert Welch. A directory of organizations covers organizations no longer in existence in addition to those currently active and a few critical of the religious right. The address, phone number, executive director, and publications of the organization are included. The annotated bibliography and mediography list titles by and about the religious right, including radio and TV programs and Internet sites. An extensive glossary and index are appended.

Burns (co-author of Most Excellent Majesty: A History of Mount Greylock ) provides a sensitive and absorbing account of one of the most enigmatic Christian sects in American history: the Shakers, dedicated to personal piety, communal living and equality between the sexes. The author focuses on three communities in Massachusetts and Connecticut. Founded in the late 18th century, these followed the trajectory of Shakerism in general, according to Burns. The communities met with early success in both spiritual and material terms, though within the scheme of the sect itself could be seen the seeds of its own failure. The demand of celibacy and strict rules concerning conversion to the faith led to a decline in membership. Communities began closing in the late 1800s. The village of Hancock, Mass., struggled along until 1960 when it became a Williamsburg-like living museum. Burns's affectionate history is tinged with hope that the vision of the Shakers will live on. Drawing on letters and diaries of the time, this volume helps put flesh on these people who tend to live only in the memory. It will be appreciated by all interested in both religion and the history of the country.

Usefulness of Getting Financial Aid

I have found this book extremely useful in my work as a private College Counselor. I think anyone interested in hopefully obtaining financial aid will find that the information in this book comes from a reputable source. I have found that there is often a problem trying to determine whether or not the information is credible and useful. There are many sources that are neither credible or reliable.

The stories that made Seattle

Seattle's current self-indulgent concept of itself is of a comfortable, jets-rain-and-flannel-shirts backwater now finally being forced to wrestle with the fact that it's become a "big city." But as J. Kingston Pierce's subtitle suggests -- and his interesting and entertaining history reveals -- that vision of Seattle's past, if it was ever accurate, was at best only an interlude between the Emerald City's rowdy origins and the fast-paced *urbs* we are today.
For much of its early history, Seattle was a quintessential frontier town. And from that standpoint, many of the people to whom the author introduces us didn't really strike me as that "eccentric" at all. On the contrary, they seemed like the fairly standard character types one found in many American frontier settlements: the brothel keepers, the moralists, the criminals on the lam, the get-rich-quick artists, the Horatio Algers determined to make a fortune through hard work, the people who failed Back East and came west to start over, and, inevitably, the politicians.
Though these characters are familiar, Pierce does a fine job weaving them into the interesting tapestry that is Seattle history, and showing how they continued to affect the city even after its frontier days were long dead.
I for one can hardly wander through a city without wondering what kind of history took place there, what it looked like 100 years ago, and how it became what it is. The "sense of place" is very important to me. I understand Seattle a lot better for having read this book. Pierce has given faces and stories to many of the names that stare back at us from building fronts and street signs, uncovered important landmarks (literal and figurative) in the city's history, and generally done a good job proving the argument his subtitle asserts.
If, as Winston Churchill suggested, how clearly you see the past shapes how clearly you'll see the future, anyone interested in the future of Seattle (or, less pretentiously, anyone simply interested in some entertaining true stories about places that may already be familiar to you) should definitely get to know this book.

Eccentric Seattle: Pillars And Pariahs Who Made The City Not Such A Boring Place After All by longtime Seattle editor and author J. Kingston Pierce is an engaging regional history of the great city of Seattle, Washington. Kingston Pierce's keen interest in unusual aspects of history are reflected in the sometimes bizarre anecdotes (mothers urging their children to stuff salt up their noses, scores of proper Victorian ladies forced to climb 8 to 30 foot high ladders) he's gathered and included in Eccentric Seattle, stories stretching through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, to present a rollicking composite picture. Eccentric Seattle is a fun and informative collection for tourists or residents of Seattle to read through, and a highly recommended contribution to American Regional History.

A history recalled with wit and wonder

January Magazine crime fiction editor J. Kingston Pierce takes us on an effervescent journey through Seattle's ... er ... eccentric history in his latest history-related book, "Eccentric Seattle." In his introduction, Pierce describes how Seattle came to be. "Thus the city was born," writes Pierce. "It would prove to be a fast-growing but troubled child, which didn't always play well with others." This troubled-child aspect is where Pierce leads us. We learn about mail-order brides, a nutty Pulitzer Prize-winning Seattle poet; anti-Communist witch hunts in McCarthy-era Seattle; the first woman mayor of a large American city; rumrunning during Prohibition and so much more. Pierce, the author of "America's Historic Trails with Tom Bodett" and "San Francisco, You're History," has written extensively on history in general and the history of Seattle in particular, so, in "Eccentric Seattle," we believe him when he tells us that he learned "long ago that history isn't merely about dates, places, and statistics; what gives it life are the people who charted its course, whether they were empire builders or avaricious businessmen, eristic newspaper editors or erratic preachers, artists or murderers." Great Story of Family

Story of a Basque Family where they began in Spain and came to the United States. How family bonds are built and strengthened over generations, suffering, injustice the story of many who migrated to the United States. A strong culture that lives on today, in work ethics, humor, tradition, and using those lessons learned through many family members and friends. I really enjoyed the story telling, I read several chapters to my husband and he enjoyed as much as I did. A few four letter words but fit into the story. I look forward to another book by the the author

Clear, plain and simple

Although a somewhat mundane journal, Stansbury nevertheless accomplished the tedious task of surveying the entire Great Salt Lake and surrounding area, along with proposing new routes for future wagons and the railroad to California, Oregon and Utah in the years 1849-1850.
While his account is not exactly edge of your seat reading material, it does depict life along the trail accurately. If one has an interest in geology and geography, this journal may be even more engaging as he meticulously describes these subjects throughout his report.
The journal describes many important historical first-hand experiences of the times such as the meeting of numerous returning emigrants, the cholera epidemic, abandoned wagons, dead oxen and a plethora of belongings simply dumped along the way, the many graves along the trail and overall activity along the Emigrant Trail.
His report and conscience on Brigham Young and the Mormons is praiseworthy and commendable as he received much needed assistance from them while pursuing his surveying responsibilities.
Overall a worthy journal with many pages of beautiful drawings. Maps would have been very helpful.

We are God seekers and Our God teaches

This audacious book presents a creative theory of virtually everything! I am so in awe of Professor Rivkin that anything I write here is going to be inadequate. It's impossible to do justice to Rivkin's comprehensive knowledge of Jewish history and world history, to his powerful explanations of the creative power of monotheism or his observations of our present global challenges and possibilities. One must experience this great mind first hand. The Unity Principle is as accessible as it is brilliant. The man writes beautifully. This is a transformative book. You may not be the same after you read it. We are God seekers, and our God is a God who teaches. That is the essence yet only the beginning of Rivkin's offering here.

An elegantly written, scholarly review of Jewish history

This distillation of the wisdom gained in a lifetime of scholarly inquiry and teaching by a professor of Jewish history concisely presents complex concepts in a readily comprehensible and elegantly written style. Dr. Rivkin traces the metamorphoses of Jewish concepts of deity throughout the vicissitudes of Jewish historical experience, in the process documenting "the chosen people's" remarkable capacities for adaptation and survival. Inculcated and nurtured by scholars, priests, and prophets, the Jews' commitment to monotheism has remained constant through mutating prisms of experience and historical process. Indeed, Dr. Rivkin emphasizes, there is no simple or universal Jewish theology, but rather a process of searching for, rather than finding, an omnipotent deity who endowed humankind with free will and therefore with the capacities for both good and evil. Within this historical perspective, the author finds an underlying unity in the spectrum of Jewish beliefs from those of the ultra-orthodox through those of their secular and non-professing counterparts, and he identifies this unity with the liberating impulses of capitalistic globalization affecting all of humankind that are disproportionately implemented and advanced by urbanized, well-educated intellectuals, professionals, and merchants of Jewish descent. In short, this work constitutes a summary of world history with especial emphasis on the unique contributions made by those schooled in Jewish thought, values, and faith.

This work's main thesis is an elegant restatement of the principle, widely adopted by Jews of all stripes, that the child of a Jewish mother is ineluctably Jewish. Judaism is again portrayed as a nationality, not a religion that one chooses. Jewish history is paramount; Jewish theology, nebulous. It doesn't matter if one is secular, atheistic, agnostic, a convert to Buddhism or Christianity or Shintoism: if one's mother was born to Jewish parents, her offspring is embraced by Jews and Gentiles alike as inescapably Jewish. The absence of male circumcision doesn't matter; only tribal identity does. So The Unity Principle smothers all those it can claim in the face of declining religiosity and observance. I find this very depressing.

Eschewing such stereotypes, Elizabeth A. Petrino places the Belle of Amherst within the context of other nineteenth-century women poets and examines the feminist implications of their work. Dickinson and contemporaries like Lydia Sigourney, Louisa May Alcott, and Helen Hunt Jackson developed in their writing a rhetoric of duplicity that enabled them to question conventional values but still maintain the propriety necessary to achieve publication. To demonstrate these strategies, Petrino examines both Dickinson's poetry and a range of "women's" genres, from the child elegy to the discourse of flowers. She also enlists contemporary magazines, unpublished professional correspondence, even gravestone inscriptions and posthumous paintings of children to explain what Petrino calls the most significant fact of Dickinson's literary biography, her decision not to publish. In the end, we see how, "these poets create a kind of cultural palimpsest, writing and rewriting central tropes about death, marriage and motherhood, and the power and function of consolatory verse, barely visible under the erasures of literary history. Set against a new and recently recovered tradition of female verse writing, Dickinson's central place in the canon and her position as a consummate artist are clearly affirmed."
