GREAT BOOK BY A GREAT AUTHOR. FOR A RAILFAN INTERESTED IN HISTORY OF AN INDUSTRY I LOVE. THIS IS ONE OF MYRICKS BEST. HE HAS WRITTEN 5 VOLUMES OF THE RAILROADS OF ARIZONA AFTER THESE 2 OF NEVADA. PHOTOS ARE THE BEST. SEEING THE PHOTOS OF A LOST TIME BRING GOOSE BUMPS TO AN AVID READER.

William Schneider discusses how stories work in relation to their cultures and performance settings, sorts out different types of stories-from broad genres such as personal narratives and life histories to such more specific and less-often considered types as presentations at hearings and other public gatherings-and examines a variety of critical issues, including the roles and relationships of storytellers and interviewers, accurate representation and preservation of stories and their performances, understanding and interpreting their cultural backgrounds and meanings, and intellectual property rights. Throughout, he blends a diverse selection of stories, including his own, into a text rich with pertinent examples.

William Schneider is curator of oral history and associate in anthropology at the Rasmuson Library, University of Alaska Fairbanks, where he introduced oral history "jukeboxes," innovative interactive, multimedia computer files that present and cross-reference audio oral history and related photos and maps. Among other works, his publications include, as editor, Kusiq: An Eskimo Life History from the Arctic Coast of Alaska and, with Phyllis Morrow, When Our Words Return: Writing, Hearing, and Remembering Oral Traditions of Alaska and the Yukon.

Wonderful inspirations

Moving from Florida to New Mexico is a learning experience. Styles of homes and furnishings are very different as one might expect in leaving the tropics for the desert.

This book gave me beautiful pictures to help in the transition and build a home with style. I highly recommend it for beautiful concepts in decorating and design and those who desire pictures to get creative juices flowing!

Lawrence, a naturalist and newspaper columnist, knows a great deal about a great many things, and she parades her knowledge graciously and triumphantly in this field guide to familiar wildlife. The book is not an identification manual. Rather it collects short essays on topics ranging from fall wildflowers to shooting stars. All are solidly researched and elegantly written, and throughout run Lawrence's gentle humor and original insights. I recommend this book to nature lovers everywhere!

great book

this book is great it would be beneficial for anyone going or wanting to go to college. There are tons of undergrad scholarships and some grad scholarships if you are in a grad program. I am considered a non degree seeking student so there was nothing for me. I plan to pass this book through the family and let my younger relatives reap the benefits of this book.

In this earnest and well-researched book, Melosh examines the visual politics of two New Deal art programs. The Treasury Section of Fine Arts funded murals and sculpture in public buildings and is often confused with the larger Federal Arts Project of the Work Projects Adminstration (WPA). Both programs created a set of cultural images rooted in the paternal liberalism of the times, and Melosh examines dozens of artworks as subtle or overt conveyors of sexual and racial symbolism. With its small illustrations, extensive notes, and somewhat spare analysis, this book will be of most interest to academics.

Between Genders studies representations of gender in a group of early and mid-nineteenth-century French texts. The five texts examined are diverse in both literary form and theme: two novels, Honore de Balzac's La Fille aux yeux d'or, Theophile Gantier's Mademoiselle de Maupin, a novella by Charles Baudelarie, "La Fanfarlo," Claire de Duras's pseudo-confession narrative, Ourika, and an autobiography of an intersexual, currently known under the title Herculine Barbin. These texts all share a preoccupation with experiences of gender and with vicissitudes of gender identities. Between Genders demonstrates how gender differentiation becomes a defining issue in early French Modernism. It also explores how border crossings among seemingly distinct terms of identification (heterosexuality, homosexualities, androgyny, etc.) put in question the idea of identity and provoke reconsideration of other important issues: esthetic, ethical, and political questions that are the subject of intense scrutiny and contestation throughout the period. Nathaniel Wing is Professor of French at Louisiana State University.
