About the Author
Roberta Moore is an interpretive park ranger at Great Basin National Park in eastern Nevada. She sits on the Eastern Nevada Landscape Coalition Board of Trustees, which is working to restore damaged areas of the eastern Nevada landscape to their natural state.

Scott Slovic is professor of literature and environment at the University of Nevada, Reno. He has published widely on nature writing and ecocriticism and served as founding president of the Association for the Study of Literature and Environment.

A celebration of and a case made for wilderness in Nevada

"Wild Nevada: Testimonies On Behalf Of The Desert" is a collection of essays that promote the expansion of legally protected wilderness areas in the Silver State. The title follows in the footsteps of similarly-minded publications such as "Testimony: Writers of the West Speak on Behalf of Utah Wilderness" and "Arctic Refuge: A Circle of Testimony." As Roberta Moore and Scott Slovic explain, 'wilderness' isn't a notion that most Americans associate with Nevada. This is unfortunate since Nevada is one of the most beautifully wild states in the country. At the same time, she has been slammed with nuclear testing, heavy mining, extensive grazing and designation as the nation's nuclear waste depository. As resident populations grow and resources become scarcer, the editors propose to protect what's left with the creation of wilderness areas. The thirty testimonies come from a broad range of writers including academics, ranchers, politicians and rangers. Naturally, some of the selections resonate more than others. Jon Christensen's 'Nevada: Wilderness or Wasteland' is especially interesting in that it offers the assessments of John Muir. US Senator Richard Bryan shares insights he gained when taking a trip into the Black Rock Desert. The book features many persuasive writings on Yucca Mountain. US Senator Harry Reid once more advocates his home state's natural wonders while touting his accomplishments in wilderness expansion. As an artistically written yet fact filled essay, Reid's 'Blank Spot on the Map' is deeply satisfying. As with Snyder's 'Finding Space in the Heart,' the testimonies actually extend beyond essays to occasionally include poetry. The contributors section offers a useful write-up on each author, illuminating the life experiences that influenced the angle in each essay or poem. Early in "Wild Nevada," many of the writers appeal to the reader's spirituality. This reviewer has always found an appeal to the reader's belief in the supernatural to be a weak argument to get anybody to do anything let alone protect the environment. For the most part, the short essays (most are only a few pages) are informative and interesting opinion pieces. Some essays directly advocate a legal change in land status. Most essays offer bucolic vignettes and personal experiences in Nevada's outback. Those who think of Nevada as a landlock of dead-looking yuckiness should walk away from this book with a better sense of appreciation for the Sagebrush State's flora, fauna and geography. This is after all the goal of the book. There's always the hope that enough little books like "Wild Nevada" will eventually convince people that Nevada is not a wasteland.

When a group of California-bound "argonauts" almost perished, crossing Death Valley's wasteland in 1849, the legends of gold and hellish climate instantly achieved lasting interest.i rewrote this sentence; read carefully But modern readers will have problems with these 27 tales: most were written between 1890 and 1910 in the ornate, stilted diction of that era. There's some historical value in a few eye-witness accounts of the '49ers' troubles: John Wells Brier's "The Argonauts of Death Valley" and William Lewis Manly's "Good-Bye Death Valley!" and "Charles Alvord." The other pieces have curiosity value at best. Sydney Norman's 1908 attack on "Death Valley Scotty," titled "Chasing Rainbows in Death Valley," is longer on spleen than on facts or good writing. Sadly, there isn't much good writing here at all, and without the editors' introductory notes readers would have trouble discerning truth from fable. The final section, on "Tall Tales," dowses for humor and comes up dry.

Magnificent Overview of the "Empty Quarter"

If you were to only have one book on the Great Basin - this should be it. It covers the flora & fauna of this least know section of the lower 48 in a comprehesive, yet not belabored fashion. Plenty of salient details with a minimum - though adequate - smattering of scientific jargon. Even though I have worked for a public land management agency in the "Basin" for over 2 decades, I learned much and enhanced my understanding of things I did know. The photography by Trimble captures the inescapable beauty of the area that is unknown to the typical drive-through-as-fast-as-you-can tourist. There is no finer book - verbiage or photographic - on this largely unpopulated jewell of complex arid ecosystems.

The Sagebrush Ocean : A Natural History of the Great Basin

This book was GREAT! Between the pictures and maps I found an author who shows a great deal of expression, passion and dedication to his work. Using common names for plants and animals except when specific subspecies are mentioned made the book much more readable for a layperson such as myself.
My next trip to the Great Basin in Oregon will be more fulfilling and educational as much of my ignorance about this special area has been dispelled.
To date this is the best money I have spent on a book about the Great Basin.

Christen (religious studies, Arizona State Univ.) and Gill (religious studies, Univ. of Colorado), a scholar who has written many works on Native American religion and mythology, have created a reference to tricksters and clowns, figures found in cultures and myths worldwide but whose characteristics differ according to the culture in which they originate. The work lists 185 cultures by geographical area, followed by a main section consisting of 194 alphabetically arranged entries related to tricksters and clowns; the entries, which are heavily cross-referenced, cite the name of the character with its culture or country of origin followed by stories or other information. The entries conclude with bibliographic citations, and there is a comprehensive bibliography as well. The scope of this work is vast, covering clowns and tricksters from the ancient world to the present and including some references to cultures that no longer exist as well as material from current popular culture. About the Author
Peyton Quinn is the dean of barroom brawling. He began his training in formal martial arts systems in 1964, eventually achieving rank in karate, judo and aikido. While he continues to respect and explore Asian martial arts systems, his real-world experience has shown him that for most people, training in martial arts alone is not enough for real fighting.

Very fine; required reading in its field

The literature of martial arts and self-defense is filled with hype, and with books that fail to deliver the real goods. This gem of a book is one of the rare exceptions.
Mr. Quinn is knows a great deal about how violence actually occurs. He clearly describes what you can do to avoid violence in the first place, and how to prepare for those cases where violence cannot be avoided. The first chapter, which explains the author's "stay out of prison plan" is, by itself, worth the price of the book.
The book is informative, well thought out, well written, and even entertaining. Mr. Quinn is a natural story teller, and illustrates his arguments with very interesting personal anecdotes.
If you've read this far, you are likely considering whether you should buy Bouncer's Guide. Yes, you should.

Practical, truthful and sometimes too sure

this is probably one of the most sensible books written for learning how to get out of fights and end fights on your terms. Quinn speaks from experience and training. His anecdotes on his real life experience dealing with nut jobs serve as a reality check for every hot blooded teenager itching to get into a fight at the street corner. the techniques are well grounded and sure to work in the hands of a reasonably skilled and alert person.
There are 2 reasons for giving this 4 stars in place of 5
1. Too few pictures. Some of the blocks are best explained using pictures, remember the old adage - a picture speaks ........
2. Sometimes too critical of asian martial art systems. In all fairness though, Mr.Quinn himself does state pretty early on the benefits of his grounding in the eastern systems HOWEVER it is very easy to infer from his book that eastern systems dont work at all. Thats not true. Eastern systems prepare the mind as much as the body for "effortless action" and "relentless attack". the "one mind" concept is a spinnoff of the zen philosophy(in turn derived from the indian concept of "shunya" meaning Nill or "nought"). this philosophical background to eastern martial systems makes it look archaic and burdensome. However, its worth learning and thereby respecting.
Overall, a great book and a sure guide to survival for the average joe on the street.

Quinn really knows his stuff and communicates it effectively

This excellent book begins by pointing out that avoiding violence is an essential technique in and of itself, just as valuable as knowing how to throw a good punch or deliver a strong kick. The fundamental elements of avoidance tactics section is important information. There are also solid sections on the realities of fighting which, as experienced warriors understand, is nothing like what you see in the movies. It's ugly stuff best avoided. Even when you triumph there are legal (and medical) ramifications that can come back to haunt you. The author's stay out of prison plan is excellent. Advanced practitioners should appreciate this information but won't get a lot out of the rest of the book.

The principles of defensive and offensive techniques are fairly basic, but well written and comprehensive. He covers striking, grappling, and movement in good detail. Don't forget, however, that you really cannot learn this stuff solely from a book. It should be supplemented with a hands-on instructional program. Chapter 7, which covers how to select an appropriate martial art for your own personal safety is an outstanding overview for beginners that can help you find one.

The Great Plains History

Col. Richard Irving Dodge graduated in 1848 from West Point and served in the Civil War, the campaigns against the Indians in the 1870's and as a regimental commander until his death in 1895. His book was also published in England and was translated into German in 1884 where it was very popular. The edited version in 1989 follows much more closely his original manuscript. Although there are many books which go into greater detail on specific localities or aspects of the the plains and people, few offer the broad scope in geography, animal life and human culture that Col. Dodge incompasses. From the Guadalupe Mtns. in Texas to Nebraska, from Missouri to the Rockies the author draws on first hand experience to describe the plains at the moment it was overrun by civilization. In 1877 the Atlantic Monthly recommended it as "an excellent book" that "must long serve as the most trustworthy compendium of an evanescent phase of our nation's history".

Observation: Moses Style In order to properly attend to the needs of a flock, a shepherd must be acutely aware of the surrounding environment: the weather, possibilities for shelter, sources of food and water, and the presence of predators. If you have ever watched a campfire, for example, you know it takes quite a while until you notice the wood burning up. Moses, a shepherd, was so keenly observant that he spotted a bush that was burning without being consumed. Moses had to watch for a long time to make his observation. Perhaps that is one of the reasons God chose Moses: In him, God had a patient and observant leader. Ages: 7 and up Hikers' Goals: To observe the colors in nature with heightened awareness Materials: Paper paint samples from a paint or hardware store, cut into one- inch color squares Procedure: This activity is a great walking game. Tell the story of the burning bush, focusing on Moses' ability to observe. Give a paint square to each hiker. Ask the hikers to match the color exactly to something they find along the way. Encourage them to be as observant as Moses. Debriefing: Examine together the items the hikers found to match their paint squares. Questions to Ask Hikers: Did the Moses story influence the way you searched? Did your patience help you to observe more? Which colors were hardest to match? Why?

Best Way to See How You'll Do on the CLEP

If you're planning to take a CLEP test, this book is the best way to predict how you'll do. I've seen the tests in some review books, and they're way, way off the mark. The questions in this book were written by the College Board,the actual testing agency, and they're very similar to the actual ones on the test.

Great place to start!

I used this book as an outline to help me study for some of my CLEP tests, and I passed every single one. This book is pretty accurate. At the beginning of whatever test you wish to take, the book gives a description of the exam, and a pretty detailed list of all the topics that are going to be on the test. I went to the library, checked out textbooks pertaining topics listed, read up on it to refresh my memory, and did example problems for each sections. AFTER all that, I worked on the exam that came with the book...kind of like a test for all that studying. It may sound like a ton of work, but I would rather do all of this in my own free time than to sit in class for a whole semester. The downfalls I find about this book are as follows: It does not include a full-lenght exam...which may be a good thing because it's short and to the point; and it does not include explanations to the questions on the exam. You have to find them on your own, but it's not hard if you have all those textbooks to help you. Don't study just from this book or any other CLEP study guides...just use them as outlines to help you study. Hope this helped!

I CLEP'ed Away 20 Credits!

This book helped me shave 20 credits off of my requirements to graduate! I only wish I would have found out about the CLEP program sooner (before I took other classes that I could have most likely tested out of).

The key to studying this book is to do the practice tests, and also know what the non-answers are (If the answer is "B"...also study what "A", "C" and "D" are in relation to the subject in which you are studying). They WILL show up in the test. I PROMISE YOU!
