A very impressive collection of stories

The reader (at least this one) sympathizes with both sides of a cultural divide in the stories that have a wide range of Latinos in or having been in New Mexico, southern Colorado, Texas, or southern California. There are Guatemaltecos, Salvadoreans, Chileans, Colombians, unacculturated (to Anglo America) Mexican immigrants, and monolingual English-speaking scions of families long in the US.
There is considerable humor, although oftentimes of a quite forlorn form ("Pickup," in particular), hardly any magic realism (just hints in "Archangela's Place"), some Spanish words and expressions that might stump some readers (especially the youthful vato slang in "Eloy"), no graphic sex or violence.
Some of the stories (e.g., "Cosas, Inc." and "Tongue") have what I consider firm endings. Some others, especially "Age of Copper" and "Weeds" have interesting and complex characters I'd have been interested to follow further. That is, some of the stories seem embryonic novels.

Jose Skinner will become a household name in American Literature -- and NOT because he is of color. This is an honest, but polished work -- unlike so many first books by authors who have been published only due to their minority status. Skinner is a writer, and he proves it through deft manipulation of the reader through his prose and plotting, and his tireless invention of new stories. Like vitamins, I was taking one story from this book a day on my subway commute, and was sorry to see it end. You don't find gems like this every day!

A careful reading of Joe Skinner's work would show that much of the sincerity present in his writing comes from the fact that he is racially Anglo and culturally Latino. But that doesn't stop readers from projecting their own hang-ups upon the text in their reviews, does it? A great book from a great writer.

There are so many "Mexican Cuisine" books out there that I must admit, I am somewhat jaded when it comes to picking these up. I am glad that I did stop and take a look at this one. SIMPLE, FUN, TASTY AND IT WILL MAKE YOU WANT TO THROW A FIESTA IN YOUR KITCHEN. Easy to follow and prepare recipes of well known Mexican dishes with a definite American flavor. This is not a recipe book on traditional Mexican dishes, but a great blending of cultures north and south of the border that gives you a tasty opportunity to serve really good food that is also pleasing to the eyes. Easy to make Cha Cha Spread (love the name) for quick cracker snacks, Margarita Rumba fruit salad that will have you looking at fruit in a whole new light, Green Chile Chicken Alfredo that will have you dancing in your kitchen are among my favorites. Lots of information for the novice or experienced cook, good resource material and explainations make it thorough. A great and creative cook make it a fantastic addition to your library. The memoirs of the great Greek shadow puppeteer and his history of the art of Karagiosis. His father was blinded by a stone falling on him while he was working as a laborer on the Acropolis. His mother took in washing. After the accident he led his father out begging during the days. At night he sneaked off to the shadow theater which was thought unrespectable. Karagiosis became his great passion. He worked first as a puppeteer's assistant and was able to start on his own when a neighbor gave him a sheet. This he made into a screen which he slept beside outdoors at night so that it would not be stolen. He made his own puppets, scenery, signs, wrote his own plays and performed them with the help of a singer. Memoirs describes his beginnings, the 1914-18 war, the coffee houses all over Greece where he performed and became famous, World War II and the German Occupation. History and Art of Karagiosis tells the main schools of shadow puppetry, the best known puppeteers! -- 'Antonis Poriotis. A good player but he died of too much wine in 1938. It gives the main karagiosis characters and lists the best-known plays. The book is illustrated with Spatharis' own shadow figures.

Sotiris Spatharis, a Greek born in 1898, taught himself to read and write by studying gravestones. Before his death in 1974, he had become one of the foremost practitioners of karagiosis, or shadow puppetry. These memoirs explore the traditions of this form of puppetry at the same time as they provide a picture of Greece from1900 to 1945. (Publishers Weekly is mH) Spatharis (1898-1974) relates his life as a leading shadow-puppeteer in Greece during the heyday (1924-44) of the form called karagiosis. The memoirs are told in a simple, unpretentious, and almost primitive narrative. Half of the small volume is devoted to an inexact but revealing "History of the Art of Karagiosis"- including thumbnail sketches of the most prominent puppeteers. -- Choice

I didn't join the army until 1914 because my name was not down on the call -up lists...My father gave me ninety-five cents all in five cent pieces, saying-- "here you are my son, take these, they're all I've got." ...I was a muleteer in the second divisional workshop unit....As if it were not enough that I should have a vicious mule, I had over me a sergeant who had taken a dislike to me... Suddenly I saw General Kontarato in front of me, pointing to me and saying-- "You there! What are we all here for?" I "We are soldiers united in brotherhood to defend our country" The General- "Well said! Until that time comes we must do what we can to keep each other amused. Now get behind the screen and do us a show."

a masterpiece of greek literature and art

The great tradition of Karagiosis (Greek shadow puppet plays), as described by one of it's true masters. Sotiris relates the mad tales of his life spent at the service in this extraordinary art form. The shadow puppet theater intersects with many worlds: the Ottoman Empire, the Greek street scene, the criminal underworld and political parody, rembetika... Sotiris is its Virgil and its Buster Keaton. His mad life, full of guts, laughter and puppets, starts off with an attempted kidnapping and never lets go. Portraits of the other masters of the art weave and warp with flashes in time, Salonika, the Colonels, the Nazi Occupation, the Resistance.
The second part of the book is the history of the art explained in clear, sharp terms. There are reproductions of his beautiful puppets and an important list of plays, biographies of the innovators (sometimes very funny), the whole scene....
Can't recommend this enough. For admirers of the art of puppets, for Balkanists, historians, whatever else. Through it all shines through the irrepressible character of the author.
Sotiris lives forever in time. If the future is left with any memoirs of our agonized and convulsive century, I hope that this is chief among them. Then maybe our descendants will think that we had some sense of art, that we were not an utter waste.
An absolute masterpiece, beautifully written and finely translated.

New Haggadah

I ordered this to replace the 25+ copies that were lost when I lost my home to Hurricane Katrina. This was the Haggadah my late husband used to conduct our Seders for our large family and group of friends plus any local university students that had no place to attend a Seder. We used them for over 40 years, I love them and have never found any of the newer editions that were as meaningful..

Practical approach -- completely implementable!

Its not often a book comes along that not only is a pleasure to read but actually gives sound advice that can be understood and readily implemented 'straight from the page'! Tim O'Hanlon has provided such a text for those of us involved in ISO 9001:2000 audits. The practical approach that brings auditing into the realm of business reality makes this an immmensely useful read. Its on my compulsory reading list for clients who want to revamp their auditing process so as to realise the value-adding potential of audits. My advice -- buy it, read it then use the knowledge to improve your processes!

Dr O'Hanlon's book is ensightful and refreshing!

This book is a breath of fresh air in an area made stuffy by boring quality books that make no sense unless you already know your stuff and if you did you wouldn't buy the book in the first place!
Dr. O'Hanlon seems to realise this and explains everything using easy to understand terms and useful diagrams. I heartily recommend purchasing this book...it certainly provided me with an interesting perspective of the auditing system!

I was given the job of planning the transition of our existing system to ISO 9001:2000 and someone said "Read Tim O'Hanlon's book". I did and I am so pleased. I got much more than I bargained for. When I saw the title I thought it was not what I needed but I was wrong..it was the only thing I needed. This guy really knows what he is going on about.

Helpful Insights to Erdrich's Work

This book is especially useful for someone who may not be able to identify all of the illusions to Native American culture in Erdrich's work. It also provides helpful summaries of her main works with a list of themes and questions to discuss as well as a family tree that comes in handy for anyone having a problem keeping all of Erdrich's characters straight. For teachers planning on using any of Erdrich's books or any Native American literature in their classroom, there is also a long list of suggested background reading that serves as an introduction to Native American culture.
