Honest and humorous portrayal of frontier life.

The writer is very honest in her portrayal of frontier life. Told in the first person using common language of the times. The reader gets a first hand account of the fierce independence of early settlers. The book is also humorous as the author looks at the unsophisticated life led by her and her neighbors. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in history with a light, human touch.

Hardscrabble

Hardscrabble is a fascinating first person account of early life in 20th century Northern California foothills. Full of fascinating characters like loggers cutting shingles off of trees on other peoples property, bootleggers, cattle and hog ranchers, thieves and families trying to scratch a living off the unforgiving hills. I recommend it highly to anyone interested in finding clues as to how Northern California became what it is today.

I loved reading this book. The writer Anita Kunkler is my great grandmother. It's so nice being able to read a book and know it's my family history. History that I would have never been able to hear if it wasn't in a book. This is a great book. It's a book that has many feelings to it. Hope you enjoy.
