From the Author
Like the main character of my novel, I almost drowned when I was a child growing up in the desert. From this almost final moment in my life, I began writing the first chapter of what would become CROSS OVER WATER. I also find it significant that I wrote most of my published work, including full drafts of the novel outside the narratives' dominant settings. This creative distance is apparent in the novel's themes of cultural displacement and sacred quest. It seemed that I had to leave the warm confines of Lower Valley El Paso to write about the vast desert landscape.
About the Author
Richard Yañez was born and raised on the U.S.-México Border. He is the author of El Paso del Norte: Stories on the Border and Cross Over Water: A Novel. His work appears in Hecho en Tejas: An Anthology of Texas Mexican Literature and U.S. Latino Litertaure Today. He is a professor of English at El Paso Community College, where he teaches writing and Chicano Literature in The Puente Project.

A good writer who misses the mark

Richard Yanez is a good writer. His prose is MFA clean with the usual minimalist approach that writing programs seem to produce these days. This is the first novel he has written, I think. He published a book of short stories as well. As a resident of El Paso, Texas, I like to read what our local writers are doing and I think that Yanez has the potential to do some great work. However, to me, this book is a work that tantalizes you with possibility, but ends in disappointment ( for me). I like novels to be more than a collection of random events, pieced together with the idea that it is a "coming of age" story that follows a character chronologically through their lives or a portion thereof. At the end of the story, I like some sort of payoff, whether a big event, a subtle change in character, or something that makes me feel like the effort of reading it was worth it. I didn't get that with this book. I think that plot ( I know it's a dirty word for many) is important. The main character must be going towards something or there is no reason to root for them or care about them. Their desire, their goal, becomes ours. And the momentum that produces, can drive any story to heights this book doesn't try to reach. A book where this happens, then something else, then something else, with little or no relation to each other, tends to be boring. I would like to say, though, that Yanez has skills. He is a good writer. And I will read his next effort when that comes out. He can do better,yes. But I think he has stories he wants to tell and the ability to do them justice.

Great Coming of Age Story

This is a coming of age story with El Paso as the backdrop. The author uses great imagery to describe the desert environment of this west Texas town. The central character, Ruly, is a person who always seems to be caught up in the middle of his decisions, but always seems to have good intentions. The book details his life growing up focusing on his relationships with women with his cousin and girlfriends. We see Ruly through his awkward adolescent stage which always create a sense of humor at how weird we all feel throughout our innocence.
Having grown up and lived in El Paso makes it like a homecoming to me, but it can be enjoyed by anyone from anywhere due to the many experiences that Ruly faces throughout the book.
It must have been a good book because I kept wondering what would Ruly be doing now. His character stayed with me long after the book ended simply because he is someone within us that always wants to know who we are.... I stayed cuz.
