Must read for Deming advocates and business leaders

"Out of another @#&*% Crisis - Motivation through Humiliation" grades US business on how well they stack up against Dr. Deming's Principles. Deming's 1982 book, `Out of the Crisis' put forth 14 principles for leaders and organizations desiring to improve quality and service. More importantly, Deming's 14 points hammer home the concepts of leadership and respect for people.
So, you ask, how does US business stack up with Deming. According to the author, US industry has earned mostly `Fs' and `Ds.' Micklewright provides data and observations to support his personal characterization of industry's performance. Like Micklewright, I too, am a huge fan of Deming which may explain my bias for a five-star rating. Like Deming, Micklewright calls things as he sees them without gilding the lily. If you want a candid and refreshing look at how US industry is performing according to Deming's teachings, this is a must read.

Out of Another Crisis? We never came out of the first one!

This book is for everyone who has the vague feeling that the typical Western approach to "business improvement" simply isn't working. Six Sigma, Lean, TQM, BPR, ISO 9001, Balanced Scorecard and all the rest. This book is a Root Cause Analysis of exactly why this is.
For me, the most significant cause picked out is that companies have lost the principle of self-reliance. "Got a problem? Let's buy in a quick fix solution!" Whether this is an expensive new machine at GM, or an expensive and enormous Black Belt training programme, organisations have lost the ability to design and build something for themselves that fits precisely the need they have, and they have simply lost the ability to learn and adapt as a result. Self reliance is one of the key principles that Toyota have lived by on their way to becoming the largest automotive manufacturer in the world.
As an author, Mike Micklewright has two fabulous qualities that make his writing extremely compelling. An incisive sense of humour, and an acute ability to get to the heart of the matter and tell it how it is. He quotes Thomas Jefferson frequently; "Be flexible in style, but unwavering, like a rock, in principles". Yet it appears that far too many US and UK managers do not work by a set of principles; "Flexible in principles, but unwavering in (command and control) style". Whilst aimed primarily at a US audience, this book crosses the Atlantic very well.
Mike Micklewright, like me, is an avid fan of Dr W Edwards Deming. It is Deming's principles that he is advocating we should adopt. He brings Deming's work into the 21st Century, and examines how organisations today live up to the principles set out by Deming in his famous 14 points. We score badly - most significantly, for me, against the need for "Constancy of Purpose"; the author goes on to set out how the roots of the current global financial crisis are indeed in the short-termism and lack of constancy of purpose with which many of our institution work.
Micklewright doesn't just leave you with an exposition and explanation of what's wrong. He sets out an alternative way forward for the Quality Improvement profession that is elegant and simple - effectively based on Dr Deming's timeless principles, education and the 7 basic Quality tools of Kaoru Ishikawa. And this aimed at "Continuous Self-Improvement through Knowledge Gain". The author reminds us of Deming's saying "There is no substitute for knowledge", and signs off with "Knowledge and Leadership....your company could and should develop its own culture, methods, tools, style, and processes based on the principles of Dr Deming." I would add, and the principle of "Self Reliance" demonstrated by Toyota.
Finally, one neat little device that illustrates the author's humour, but which I actually found very useful, is an additional page numbering system. Mike Micklewright is quite honest and self-effacing about himself throughout the book, including owning up to being driven to achieve grades and belts and report cards and so on. So he says (when reading a book) "I never really care what page I'm on. I'm only concerned about how many more pages I have left to read". So each page of the book has the conventional page number, together with the % of the book you have completed at that point, and how many pages remaining - so page 101 represents 41.7% read and 141 pages remaining!

A Must Read!!

As a Demingite and quality professional myself, I congratulate Mike Micklewright for writing this terrific book - "Out of another @#&*% Crisis - Motivation through Humiliation." The book is straight forward, honest and well-crafted. My copy sits on my bookshelf next to a signed copy of Dr. Deming's "Out of the Crisis." U.S companies must awaken to the very competitive global marketplace and the new role for American management. As the years pass, I realize just how correct Dr. Deming was in his teachings. All managers should consider this book required reading!
