Skylark: The Life, Lies, and Inventions of Harry Atwood, by Howard Mansfield

Harry Atwood was among the most flamboyant of the celebrated and often foolhardy pioneers of American aviation. Part daredevil, inventor, entrepreneur, and con artist, he became renowned for his flying feats, his plans for a bewildering variety of aircraft, an his ability to inspire otherwise sensible Yankees to invest enormous time and money in his invariably ill-fated projects. As part of the early circle around Wilbur and Orville Wright, Atwood set many of the early US flying records and was constantly in the headlines for two decades after 1910. He built his own airplanes and developed imaginative but never-quite-realized plans for flying wings, Navy seaplanes that would carry immense cargoes, and cheap one-person planes that would be made from a single birch tree. His is a classic American story about riding the wave of enthusiasm in an era of technological progress while "selling blue-sky" to an eager and gullible public. Atwood's biography describes a larger than life individual, whose personal life was as complex and bizarre as his professional escapades, during the vibrant and innocent years when the sky no longer was the limit

From Publishers Weekly
The considerable entertainment value of Mansfield's account of a forgotten aviation pioneer who was also an inventor, a liar and a swindler derives more from the absorbing subject than the author's workmanlike telling. Harry Atwood (1884-1967), a graduate of the Wright Brothers flying school in Dayton, Ohio, attracted attention with his headline-grabbing exploits, including a daredevil flight over New York City, during which his biplane was buffeted by dangerous winds, and a trip to Washington, D.C., at the end of which he landed his plane on the White House lawn. Mansfield (In the Memory House) draws on aviation history as well as interviews with several of Atwood's children to produce a straightforward account of Atwood's checkered career. After he gave up exhibition flights, Atwood patented a wide variety of inventions, including an "airmobile"Aa four-passenger aircraft built from a single birch tree that would sell for the price of a Chevrolet. Atwood embarked on a long career of failed inventions, bankruptcy and court cases brought by angry stockholders who believed they had been cheated. Mansfield provides an engaging account of early aviation history, and his book evokes the early part of the century when Americans embraced the promise of technology, when progressAeven in the form of an airmobileAseemed possible and limitless. From Library Journal
Trained by the Wright brothers, Harry Atwood was renowned for his flying feats and set many early aviation records. In addition, he was a prolific inventor, developing several useful products that would have made him a fortune had he not always had some aeronautical end in view. Mansfield (In the Memory House, LJ 10/1/93) relates the story of this flamboyant promoter with all the feel and flavor of the age, revealing a man who was at once a doting parent and a stern father, a strict moralist and a con man who had no intention of repaying his debts. Yet in the end Atwood still eludes us, just as he did those backers clamoring for their money. Recommended for public libraries and history of aviation collections.?Stephen H. From Kirkus Reviews
The bizarre life of a daredevil pioneer pilot, trained in the Wright Brothers school, who became a visionary inventor, entrepreneur, spellbinding salesman of possibilities rather than solid achievements, showman, engineer (MIT), manipulator of trusting investors vanishing capital, liar, and deadbeat, of whom it was said he spent more time in bankruptcy court than in church. Mansfield (In the Memory House, not reviewed, etc.) attempts to bring to life a complex, extraordinary personality in rapidly changing times of developing technology. Few early pilots (190811) died a natural death as they sought to understand and master aerodynamics, changing winds that threatened the stability of flimsy biplanes, and temperamental engines suddenly losing power. Atwood often risked death as he learned by trial and error. To maintain a precarious living, barnstorming aviators became daring stuntmen in a circus atmosphere of cheering crowds at state fairs. The restless Atwood showed great imagination and worked many hours to gain hundreds of patents. To attract research money, he wove together truth and lies with partial successes and failures. Mansfield writes of Atwood's wealth and poverty succeeding each other as he strove to become the Henry Ford of aviationdesigning, manufacturing, and selling his product. During WWII he contributed to the famous Higgins boat, essential in invasions that helped to achieve victory. He also led a complicated private life, marrying five times and becoming an adoring yet despotic father, walking away from his children for extensive periods. Before dying at 83, Atwood had a warm reunion with his family, long scattered by geography and time. Mansfield likens Atwood to the skylark, because he had the instincts of a bird flying as high as he could in a kind of limitless space. A large slice of America's not-well-known past and of an eccentric genius who helped develop modern aircraft. A well- researched, honest evaluation of a man and his times. -- Copyright ©1999, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Fantastic book! I give 4 and a half stars............
By A Customer
I would have given 5 stars if only..........the Author had given us even more details about Atwood's flying, inventions and more documentation (patent records, court records, stock market records, etc.) to support his research. It is anyway a great book considering also how difficult it must have been to find material about such an interesting and "slippery" character. Being an aircraft builder myself, I would have also liked to learn more about the process he used in the construction of his "composite" airplanes and if any artifact has survived the inventor. Buy the book, you won't regret it.

A really great book (not a blue sky pitch, honest)
By A Customer
Harry Atwood is a character for the ages! If you want to see how to push new technology in a technologically naive age, with all of its outrageous successes and failures, this is the book to read. Harry is a consumate inventor along the lines and times of Edison and Ford, inventing some ingeneous laminate materials and an airplane for the rest of us. However he is also hardheaded, an expert in flim-flam, and an absolute failure in business. Yet despite his failures, he is ultimately a success! Good reading--save an afternoon to read it through.

Great research...fascinating story!
By J. Wilson
The story of Harry Atwood is a fascinating one. Mansfield tells tales of Atwoods adventures during the early days of aviation in a way that really takes you back to a different time. The meticulous research Mansfield did to write this book really shows in his liberal use of reports from local newspapers, living relatives, etc. If you enjoy flying, inventors or learning about interesting and eccentric people, read this book...you won't be disappointed!
